Simple Fall Decorating Ideas for a Cozy Home or Apartment

As fall transitions us to cooler months, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips and makeup trends to hairstyles and home décor, we’re excited to see how these stylistas gear up for fall weather. This week, we’re welcoming Liz of With Wonder & Whimsy to share how she’s refreshing her home décor for autumn.

A neutral, all-season palette gives you flexibility with transitioning your home décor from one season to the next. One of my favorite color combos right now is blush, ivory and gold, since the soft hues create a space that feels airy, light, and clean. Believe it or not, blush functions much like a neutral. It can skew cool in the spring months when paired with pastels, or warm in the fall months when paired with rustic earth tones.

My living room features a warm neutral palette of ivory, beige, blush and wood. These are versatile hues that look great all year round – a blank canvas that allows me to play with different accent colors each season. For fall, I favor an earthier aesthetic. I like to accessorize with raw materials like wood and marble, plush and cozy textiles, and pops of autumn color. By incorporating decorative elements like pillows, candles, throws and accessories, you can easily update any space. I recently stopped into Meijer to shop their home décor department, so I’m sharing my picks and a few tips for a fall refresh.

Take Note of the Latest Trends

A simple way to refresh and modernize your space is to look at the latest trends. It’s fun to shop for something new and current and to incorporate it into your existing style. Rose gold is super popular right now, and mercury glass is an ultra-glam trend that pairs beautifully with rustic elements. I purchased a pair of lamps from Meijer to refresh my buffet and lend a warm, rosy glow to my living room. Plus, they fit with my all-season décor, so I can change how I style them throughout the year.

Add Pops of Seasonal Color

Color is my favorite strategy for refreshing a space. It’s such a simple way to reinvigorate a room, create a mood and transition your decor from season to season. An apple cinnamon candle brings a bold pop of red to the room and fills the space with autumn scents. A bouquet of autumn blooms rounds out the color palette with rich, warm tones. You can also make use of things you already have and curate your existing décor by color. Stacked books, board games, and glass bottles in shades of red and gold keep the palette focused and popping.

Incorporate Rustic Materials

For fall, I like to decorate with heftier, rustic materials like stoneware, pottery, wood and marble. These materials are also very trendy right now, and Meijer has a nice selection of accent furniture and accessories to help you shop the trend. I purchased a few pieces to update my collection and incorporate some earthy and eclectic elements into my space. The vase is a great all-season piece, but stuffed with colorful wildflowers, it makes the perfect fall bouquet. The cheeseboard is cut in a diagonal line, with one half wood and the other half marble. This is a really neat piece that’s both functional and stylish, the ideal canvas for a cornucopia of tasty fall snacks.

Accessorize with Plush, Cozy Textiles

Fall is the season of all things cozy. We like to hunker down with our pumpkin spice lattes, a good book and a cuddly blanket. Plush textiles like velvety throws and fluffy pillows add warmth and texture to a space. They’re functional but comforting, and really lend a welcoming, homey feel to a room.

Provide Warm Lighting

Decorating your home is all about curating a space to evoke a certain mood. And for fall, many of us want to feel warm and cozy. Lighting is another way to achieve this. It’s a simple and affordable way to create a welcoming respite from the autumn chill. Stylish lamps and flickering candles provide a soft, warm glow and romantic atmosphere.

Refreshing your space for the new season doesn’t have to be expensive or a chore. By incorporating a few new pieces from Meijer and using what you already have in creative ways, you can make your home a cozy and comforting retreat this fall!

5 Simple Ponytail Hairstyles to Try this Season

As fall transitions us to cooler months, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips and makeup trends to hairstyles and home décor, we’re excited to see how these stylistas gear up for fall weather. This week, we’re welcoming Lisa of LMP Collections to share five easy ways to elevate a basic ponytail.

Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year, and the only thing that’s worse than spending time curling your hair while it’s beautiful outside is the damage hot tools can do to your strands. During the summertime, I like to give my hair a little bit of a heat break – but it’s a great habit to get into all year round! This fall, I’ve been playing around with letting my hair air dry naturally, and then styling it from there without using straighteners or curling irons.

It’s so easy to fall back on a basic ponytail (especially when I’m in a rush), so over the past week, I’ve tried various ways to update the classic ‘do. I rounded up five fun and simple ways to elevate a ponytail, and they’re all perfect for transitioning my beauty routine for fall!  Did I mention these are also easy to do on-the-go!? There’s no time to waste when we could be out picking apples or sipping pumpkin lattes!

First, let’s talk about all the products I use to prep my hair for these styles.

The number one item I need to take my hair from shower to street is a Wet Brush. It’s the gentlest brush I’ve ever tried and the only one that doesn’t pull all my hair out when it’s tangled! It’s the perfect item to have while styling some epic ponytails.

Dove Volume + Fullness Dry Shampoo is another item that’s great to always have around – I typically keep two or more bottles handy at a time. If you’re looking for a style to combat second day hair, spray dry shampoo on your roots before trying the ‘dos below. Use your fingers to make sure the product gets completely worked in!

I’ve used this Bed Head Smoothing Cream for years. My sister got me hooked on it and it works like magic! Apply a small amount of this product to wet hair before it air dries to keep your locks under control before pulling them back into a pony. Smoothing cream is perfect for any season, too – it helps tame frizzy flyaways during the summer and rids my hair of static when fall rolls around.

Finally, Dove Extra Hold Hairspray is always a styling necessity. It’s the essential finishing touch to any great ponytail!

Now that you know which tools you’ll need, we’re ready to talk about my new favorite up-dos.

1. Double Ponytails

Sometimes we all want what we can’t have, am I right? That’s how I’ve always felt about long ponytails. Thankfully, I’ve learned the trick to achieve just that – double ponytails. Yes, you read that right! I start with a half pony, and then create another one with the rest of my strands, about one or two inches below the first. The pony on top should overlap with the bottom one, making your hair look longer and fuller than ever! Crazy how something so easy can step up your ponytail game.

2. Middle Part Ponytail

Using the same double pony method from Style #1, part your hair in the middle to create a whole new look! Adding a fun bandana around the hair tie makes for a fun, girly flare – you could also wrap your hair around the tie or use a bright scrunchie!

3. Low Ponytail

Low ponytails are just so flattering on everybody! For this specific style, I parted my hair on the side and tied my pony on the opposite side. To give my locks a fuller effect, I gently teased my strands near the hair tie and at the ends, then grabbed a smaller section of hair from the pony and wrapped it around the tie. For a little something extra, don’t be afraid to play with unique bobby pins and clips! I love how modern and simple these geometric clips are.

4. Braided Ponytail

Kicking it up a notch, why not add a braid to your classic, casual pony? Start by braiding just a few pieces of hair (the section you would use for a half pony) and then secure it all with a colorful scrunchie. If you guys didn’t know, these retro hair accessories are making a comeback! Not only does this look take less than 30 seconds, but it also adds a fun retro flare to your casual fall outfit.

5. Side Ponytail

To add a bit of spunk to your side pony, secure it with a cute, colorful tie at the top and then about two or three inches down, add another colored tie. Take the hair in-between the two ponies and gently pull to make a bit of a “bubble” effect!

There you have it, ladies! These hairstyles will help you beat the heat and keep your hair healthy and strong through the end of summer and into fall.

Ideas for Beautiful Outdoor Dining Table Décor

As we near the transition from summer to fall, it’s important to take advantage of the warm weather while we can. Before the temps cool and the leaves begin to change, host a rustic outdoor picnic with your closest friends and family! We partnered with Samantha Elizabeth to help her do just that – and give you inspiration for your own end-of-summer gathering. Whether you’re organizing an elegant bridal shower, baby shower, bachelorette party or fall dinner with your girls, we have all the secrets to making your next backyard party Instagram-worthy.

Wood Accents

Whether you’re celebrating summer or hosting your first harvest party of the season, wood is a great foundation for any outdoor picnic. Stack recycled wood pallets to create a rustic makeshift table, then incorporate the material further with a stained cutting board or serving tray. A charcuterie spread is delicious and aesthetically pleasing, no matter the season – just replace your summer fruit with apples and cranberries for fall.

Earthy Elements

You can also use earthy elements as a base for your drinks and dessert platter. A vintage wooden chest doubles as a table when moved outside, and fits effortlessly into the rustic theme when it’s painted white and distressed. Tie in raw materials by stacking a piece of plywood and log cake tray – you can even decorate a pastry with flowers or greens from your garden. Finally, a sprig of baby’s breath is the perfect finishing touch for this set-up, whether laid next to your rosé or in a bottle-turned-vase. To update the spread for an autumn get-together, swap your blush-colored beverage for your favorite red wine or cider.

Metallic Utensils

Another on-trend necessity for your next outdoor picnic comes in the form of metallic mugs and utensils. Copper, rose gold and yellow gold are having a moment, but they’re also versatile enough to use all year round. Don’t be afraid to mix and match metals, or incorporate other rustic materials into your place settings (like canvas, twine, wood, and herbs – rosemary sprouts actually are a great garnish for your napkin rings!). Serve grapefruit mules in your mugs until summer comes to an end; then switch to cinnamon apple cider or spiced punch when the leaves start to fall.

Floral Centerpieces

Fresh flowers are a natural centerpiece for a garden party or picnic, and will help bring a pop of color to the otherwise neutral setting. Peach, purple and yellow peonies are a perfect choice for summer, while roses, sunflowers, and heleniums look great for fall. Either place the flowers into small, clear vases or re-purpose Mason jars to stay true to your rustic theme.

Cozy Seats

For an extra cozy vibe your guests will love, create a seating area with throw pillows, blankets and rugs. Pastel blue will complement your summery accent hues well, while plaid prints will add a fall twist when autumn is in full force. Hang globe string lights to add a rustic, romantic ambiance (and to allow your party to continue long after the sun sets).

Now that you’re covered when it comes to picnic essentials, learn which color you need in your closet to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall.

College Shower Caddy Essentials You Need for Your Dorm

The first day of the semester is just around the corner, which means the return of homework, all-nighters and residence halls. While you’re probably prepared with college essentials like school supplies and dorm décor, it can be easy to forget about dorm shower necessities. Whether you’re sharing a bathroom with your roommate or your entire floor this year, here’s what you’ll need to fill your shower caddy.

1. Exfoliating Scrub: After a long day filled with classes and homework, give your face some much needed TLC with Clean & Clear Deep Action 60-Second Shower Mask. Its oil-free formula reaches deep to the pores to dissolve dirt, oil and even makeup, working with the steam of your shower to leave your face feeling clean and refreshed.

2. Body Wash: Between school, sleep and your social life, a few minutes to spare are few and far between. Save time in the shower with Aveeno Active Naturals Positively Nourishing Body Wash– it cleanses AND moisturizes, so you don’t have to worry about lotion post-rinse. It also contains natural ingredients like shea butter and fig to keep your skin looking healthy (and smelling great, too!).

3. Sponge: Gently exfoliate while you shower with a colorful Net Sponge. It’s a simple step and your skin will thank you!

4. Disposable Razor: Early first semester, the weather is still warm and shorts are still an option. Invest in a Gillette Venus Tropical Disposable Razor to keep your legs looking smooth in class and after hours.

5. Shave Gel: To achieve legs that are both soft and smooth, incorporate Gillette Venus with Olay Moisturizing Shower & Shave Cream into your shaving routine. It gently cleanses while you shave, so it’s the perfect two-in-one.

6. Shower Cap: For those mornings you oversleep before your 8 a.m. class, have a Bath Collection Animal Print Shower Capon hand. By keeping your hair dry during a quick in-and-out rinse, you’ll be ready to go and on your way in no time! (Check out these easy ideas for second-day hair– you can thank us later).

7. Shampoo and Conditioner: On mornings you do have time to wash your hair, use OGX Fade‑Defying Orchid Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. Their potent blend of extracts will hydrate your hair, giving it the ultimate shine – they can also protect color-treated locks from fading.

8. Shower Comb: If you’re on a time crunch and need dry hair stat, use a Goody QuikStyle Water Wicking Shower Comb. It reduces water by 20 percent and removes moisture with every stroke.

With these essentials, you’ll have everything you need to put in your shower caddy – just don’t forget the towel!

The Best Face Masks for Oily Skin

Transitioning temps can take a toll on oily skin, so it’s important to refresh your beauty products as the seasons change. Whether you’re headed back to school or just looking to update your regimen, face masks could be a great addition to your skincare routine this fall. While a single face mask won’t cure your woes instantly, investing in a few different options and creating a habit can make a difference. So if you’re looking to treat your skin to some TLC, here are four at-home face masks that work wonders on oily complexions.

The Tech: Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Treatment Mask

If your skin is acne-prone – but topical medications dry out your face – the Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Treatment Mask should be your new go-to. It uses blue light to kill bacteria and red light to reduce inflammation, which is a colorful (and effective) skincare match made in heaven. The treatment is clinically-proven, FDA cleared, chemical free and UV free, so you don’t have to worry about harmful consequences to your skin.

To use this mask, simply wash your face with your usual cleanser, pat it dry and turn the tech on. All it takes is 10 minutes! You can sit back, relax and let the lights do their magic, or go about your day while the treatment takes place. The mask comes equipped with temples (like the sides of your sunglasses), so it won’t fall off if there’s no time for rest.

Arguably the best part about this high-tech mask? You can purchase it at Meijer for under $40.

The Charcoal Mask: Yes to Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask

Another mild remedy for acne-prone complexions comes in the form of charcoal mud masks. Charcoal is used to draw impurities out of the skin, which is especially great for those of us with oily faces. Oil and dirt clog our pores making them look bigger, but charcoal pulls those toxins out, ridding us of pesky blackheads in the process.

Charcoal is an ingredient in the Yes to Tomatoes Mud Mask, but it also features additional elements like salicylic acid and aloe. The charcoal works to remove oil and dirt from the face, while the other components fight acne and re-hydrate our skin. This gentle mask is also natural and paraben-free, so dry skin due to harsh chemicals will be a thing of the past.

The detoxifying charcoal may feel cool and tingly upon application, so test a small spot inside your arm before covering your face. When you’re ready, apply the product to clean skin and leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel.

If mud masks aren’t your thing, opt for the paper sheet version instead. Just peel, stick it to your face and go!

The Clay Mask: L’Oreal Pure-Clay Mask, Detox & Brighten

To detox oily skin after wearing makeup all week, try the L’Oreal Pure-Clay Mask. When mixed with three kinds of pure clay, charcoal acts like a magnet – it draws impurities out of the skin and tightens your pores, which will make your face feel clean and refreshed. The formula is also designed to even out your complexion, so your skin may appear brighter after regular use.

After work on Fridays or before you go to bed, say goodbye to stress and its toll on your skin by applying this mask to your face. Leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water and moisturize. Clay masks often stimulate circulation and blood flow, so don’t be alarmed if there’s facial redness upon removal. Make sure to test the mask on your arm first, just in case!

The Citrus Peel: Yes to Grapefruit Pore Perfection Brightening Peel

To prepare your skin for the week ahead and leave your face glowing, use the Yes to Grapefruit Pore Perfection Peel (available at select Meijer locations) before heading to work on Monday. Grapefruit is high in antioxidants, which means this peel helps counteract wrinkles, even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of pores. The product is natural and paraben-free, so it’s the perfect finishing touch for your skincare routine.

Apply this peel to your skin post-cleanse, relax for 10 minutes, then rinse it off. You can use it up to three times per week!

The Best Back-to-School Outfits for Young Girls and Pre-Teens

Back-to-school season is just around the corner, so we’re sharing the many ways your kids can sport cute trends this fall. This week, we’re featuring ensembles designed by the adorable JoJo Siwa, former “Dance Moms” star turned young entrepreneur.

Fashion for girls is full of bright colors and bold patterns, so encourage the young ladies in your life to express themselves through style. Mixing and matching is allowed (and encouraged!) – and adding fun, girly accessories is always a plus. If you’re looking for inspiration before back-to-school shopping, here are three adorable outfits any girl would love.

There’s no doubt that JoJo Siwa’s line is colorful and vibrant, but that doesn’t mean girls with classic style can’t rock it. If your daughter prefers more of an understated look, a neutral outfit with a bold accent is the best combination. This rainbow graphic tee has the perfect amount of color, and its small polka dot pattern adds an adorable, dainty twist.

Plus, keeping the ensemble simple allows a JoJo Bow take the spotlight – just pin it to your daughter’s ponytail for a flawless finishing touch.

If your girls love a fun and spunky look, you’re in luck. There are so many bold separates for them to choose! This is especially great for ladies that like to dress themselves – the items all coordinate, so it doesn’t matter which one they go with. They can pair a bright graphic tee with their favorite denim jeans, or switch it up by rocking a tulle ballet skirt. The ballet skirt is great because it has an elastic waistband, so your kids will stay comfy even when they hit the jungle gym.

Add the iconic JoJo Bow to her hairstyle in coordinating shades and your daughter is sure to make a style statement at school.

JoJo Siwa’s designs are now available at Meijer, so head to the store and let your little ones get shopping! And for more back-to-school inspiration, check out how to incorporate your kids’ favorite colors while school shopping!

Beauty: Truth or Fiction

As the summer sun heats up, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their beauty for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming Candace of Live Love & Read to share her take on some of beauty’s biggest questions, including why bold brows can be natural and teased hair is here to stay.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

When it comes to beauty, there appears to be a lot of noise. And by noise, I simply mean there’s a lot of talk on what exactly we should and should not being doing with our daily beauty routines. Between binge watching YouTube beauty videos and following your favorite beauty gurus on social media, it’s easy to find yourself at a loss on some basic beauty 123s.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

If you’ve read some of my previous posts here on Meijer Style, then you already know how much I believe in practicality. Much like fashion, beauty should be both practical and easy for you to incorporate into your morning routine, otherwise it becomes a large headache spilling over into the rest of your day. As always, I am on a mission to help YOU! So for today’s dose of shop talk, we are going to discuss beauty truth or fiction on some basic, everyday makeup practices!

Let’s do this!

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

STATEMENT #1: Bold brows are unnatural.

Fiction. Bold brows can be TOTALLY natural. While we often see the crazy, overly bold, unnatural brows, there are ways to create bold brows without scaring anyone. What determines natural vs. unnatural brows is how you use your products.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

First things first, you want to start with decently cleaned up brows, as it allows you better control of how bold you are making them. You can clean up your brows by using a brush. Because I adore efficiency, I would encourage you to use a brown pencil that has a brush on the other end, such as the NYX Micro Brow Pencil. Once the brows have been nicely brushed, you can begin with the filling in process. For total control, start your strokes lightly.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

When you begin filling in, start at the inner brow, move to your arch and finish at the end of your brow – and repeat. Once you have the outline of your shape, you can go back in heavier with your pencil to your desired boldness.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

After filling in your brows to your liking, use concealer to accentuate your brows as well as clean up any mistakes you might have made. You can simply use whatever you normally do for your highlight concealer.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

For exactness, use a precision or detail brush that allows you to apply the concealer close to the brow without any negative space. Once you’ve applied that concealer, go in and smooth with a beauty blender, as you don’t want a hard highlight line.

The finishing touch: after you’ve applied your foundation, go back into the brows with a highlight pencil for a slight shimmer and finger blend to soften it.

STATEMENT #2: A cat-eye is not appropriate for the office.

Fiction. We’ve already heard the saying, “Everything is ok in moderation.”  Well, that is exactly the approach to creating a cat-eye for the office. By no means does your cat-eye need to be as dramatic as Cleopatra’s, but you can most definitely do a “subtle” one for the office.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

When creating an everyday cat-eye, you are going to need two things: a regular eyeliner pencil and a liquid liner (preferably one that has a curvy tip for precision). To start, use your regular eye-liner to create what I like to call a “hard line.” The hard line allows you to easily line the eye without much error.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Next, you’ll want to use the regular eyeliner to line your water line in order to balance the eye. There’s nothing scarier than an overly bold cat-eye. Balance is KEY, so line that water line.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Once the water line is prepped, you are going to use your liquid liner to trace the top line you created. To get the subtle definition, it is important to gently pull your eye as you’re tracing the hard line and extend ever so slightly to get the perfect everyday cat-eye look.

STATEMENT #3: Concealer is to be worn underneath my foundation.  Concealer is to be worn on top of my foundation.

Both are TRUE. In fact, it’s really important that we do both – the catch is making sure you are applying the correct concealer underneath and on top of the foundation.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

As we grow older in age, we all find ourselves concerned with those darker, under-eye circles. Since aging is natural, it’s also natural that we want to properly color correct those coloring imperfections.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

For perfect coverage correction, you are going to want to start with a “total” coverage concealer underneath the foundation. The one I recommend is NYX Total Coverage Concealer. Simply use a concealer brush to apply, then blend with a beauty blender. Be sure to blend well, as you will be applying your foundation on top of this.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Once you’ve applied your foundation, it is highly likely that you’ll want a little highlighter under the eyes to doubly make sure those dark circles are long gone. To accentuate/highlight under the eyes, try NYX Gotcha Covered Concealer. Since this is being used as a highlight, be sure to go a shade or two lighter so it really pops!

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Once you’ve applied the product with your brush, use an evenly and lightly damp beauty blender to blend in the product. As you blend, be sure to extend outwards, so you do not have a hard stop line of the concealer. You want it to look perfectly smooth and natural.

STATEMENT #4: Wearing matte foundation ages you.

Fiction. There are a lot of mixed feelings on this statement, but I am going to have to go with FALSE. Matte foundation can age you if you are not careful. But in my opinion it is all about how you complete the foundation that determines the outcome.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

First things first, when it comes to using matte foundation, a little goes a long way. What I’m trying to say is – you only need a little product. Without question, you will look old if you over apply.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Secondly, as a frequent matte foundation wearer, it is important that you have two products to complete your look: a good blush color and finishing powder.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

After you have applied your foundation, concealer and contour, you’ll want to apply some finishing powder. The powder is going to ensure everything is nicely polished and blended.

STATEMENT #5: Bold lipstick is ok for everyday wear.

TRUE. If women in Paris can wear red lipstick every day, so can YOU. There is absolutely nothing wrong with living on the bold side of color every day. In fact, wearing bold lipstick on the daily can become your signature statement, if you so desire.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

When it comes to wearing bold lips every day, I would encourage you to go matte vs. shiny. The matte is a bit more approachable and less overwhelming than a bright, overly shiny lipstick. Additionally, if you decide to wear a bold lipstick that is shinier, it is most definitely important to go with a matte foundation, so your makeup look is not overly shiny.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Regardless of wearing matte or shiny, be sure to take your entire makeup routine into consideration. That way you can make the necessary adjustments to ensure your beauty look is approachable for the day. You do not want to look like you are getting ready to compete at a beauty pageant with an overly done face for the office. Just a thought!

STATEMENT #6: Teased hair is a thing of the past.

Fiction. I’m from the South and we have a saying: “The higher the hair, the closer to heaven.” I cannot lie, I live for big hair. But not big in the sense that my hair is overly back combed and impossible to detangle. When it comes to teasing a lot of people think of large 1980s ‘dos. However, that isn’t the only way to get good volume.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

One trend that’s quite hot right now is tussled messy curls. Well, one of the best ways to get that look is with a little teasing action. To get started with this look, first comb out the hair so it is manageable. Granted, we want a textured messy look, but it is important that the foundation is smooth.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

After a thorough combing, you’ll want to add a little texture to the hair. To achieve this, I use a texturizing dry shampoo, spray it liberally throughout my hair, massage the product in and allow it to sit for a few minutes or so.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Once the hair has had time to settle, I proceed with curling. You can curl however you so desire, as there is no right or wrong way – it’s all about how you like the curls to fall. For me personally, I want them “away” from my face, so I curl back.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

After curling the hair, I immediately spray with TRESemme hair spray to lock in the curls. Not only does the hair spray secure the curls, but it adds more texture, which is perfect for this look.

blogger recommended beauty truth fiction style fashion meijer

Once the hair spraying has happened, it is time to TEASE. Rather than teasing at the root of the hair, tease the ends to push the hair upwards and create volume in the curls. Then proceed with the task all over. After the teasing, you will then need to go through and finger separate the curls, so you don’t have a crazy rat’s nest vibe happening.

Teasing is NOT a thing of the past! It’s all about how you do it.

From a day on the boardwalk to dining al fresco, this look is perfect for guys with a surfer-esque style. Embrace the trend fully by opting for a short-sleeved print button up, or go for an understated take with a classic striped tee. The Hawaiian print pocket acts as a bold accent here, bringing the hip, carefree outfit to a whole new level. Complete the look with a pair of solid breaker shorts, or choose casual comfort with a pair of matching joggers. Is he intrigued by patterns but a little nervous about florals? Read on for a modern take on everyone’s favorite retro print.

Tie-Dye Tees

We all know that ‘90s fashion is back and here to stay, so why not re-introduce a staple trend from your childhood? Mono-colored tie-dye tees are great for classic guys, who are also looking to add something more adventurous to their closets. Put a sporty spin on this style by adding a solid, sleeveless hoodie, or opt for something more modern by tying the print around his waist (see the beginning of this post for inspo). Both offer a contemporary take on an old school trend – so no matter which you choose, we promise you can’t go wrong.

Pink (Yes, Pink!)

Style experts say that pink will be the color of 2017, so rose-colored shorts, jackets and tees should definitely be in your man’s closet. Pink has become a color of power for both men and women – so guys shouldn’t shy away from this traditionally feminine shade. Blush pastels are the perfect addition to a light, neutral outfit and always look great whether you’re dressed up or dressed down. If he’s hesitant to add this rosy hue to his wardrobe, refer back to our advice from a few sections up. Find a tee or tank that includes pink on a small portion, or within a print that features other colors too.

With these hot summer trends, the men in your life will be looking their best.

The One Color You Need to Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

Although we’re still in the heat of summer, our minds (and closets!) have begun the shift to fall. It’s about time to retire our vibrant, colorful staples and slowly transition back to autumn hues. In order to make the breakup a bit smoother, our longstanding color crush Olive Green is here to put a fresh spin on this season’s wardrobe – even before the leaves start to fall. If you’re as in love with this earthy hue as we are, read on for four ways to transition this shade from season to season.

Lingerie-Inspired Lace Tank Top

Wear It Now: For a work-appropriate summer ensemble, tuck this tank into a pencil skirt and throw a basic cardi over your shoulders. Complete the look with block heel sandals or simple ballet flats; then add a short statement necklace as an extra chic accessory. If your plans involve a day date or shopping spree instead, denim bottoms and strappy sandals create the perfect laidback look.

Wear It Later: To transition this tank from summer to fall, pair the top with an oversized ‘90s-esque blazer. The feminine floral print coordinates with the tank’s lacy details, and the silky material matches that of the olive green top. To add to the juxtaposition of dressy and relaxed styles, finish the outfit with distressed denim and neutral slip-ons or sneakers.

Embroidered Tank with Fringe Tassels

Wear It Now: Pair this olive tank with your go-to denim shorts for a casual, carefree look made for festivals or street fairs. The boho-inspired embroidery will be the focal point of your outfit – which means necklaces aren’t necessary and your earrings should be understated. Pull your hair back to let the details shine and finish the ensemble with cork slip-ons or strappy sandals.

Wear It Later: This top can transition to cooler temps in no time by adding a cozy cardigan in a neutral tan or cream. Add your favorite jeans or tuck the top into a midi, then opt for wedge booties or mules instead of sandals. This tank would also look great with a pair of colored jeans in another fall shade like burnt orange, cream or khaki.

Sheer Top with Ruffled Sleeves

Wear It Now: For a relaxed, yet temperature-appropriate look, try this sheer and breathable olive green tunic. The effortless flow of this top makes it easy to wear with anything, while the subtly ruffled sleeves still give it that statement look. Pair the tee with capris on a cool summer night, or your go-to denim skirt for a casual daytime vibe. To complete the outfit, add tan two-strap sandals to dress it up, or opt for velvet ballet flats for a more comfortable option. As for accessories, gold bangles and hoop earrings are just enough to complement this simple ensemble.

Wear It Later: As soon as fall hits, a top like this is perfect for any activity – day or night. The sheer, lightweight material can keep you cool during the day, and is easily paired with a denim jacket for a night out. Wear the top with black skinny jeans or clean-cut, denim capris to transition into two completely different looks. Finally, add gold, silver or a pop of yellow jewelry to elevate your fashion-forward fall outfit.

Suede Tee with Lace-Up Details

Wear It Now: This suede lace-up tee reminds us of all things boho, which is why it’s a natural pair for a flowy cotton skirt. Go simple with a solid, neutral midi-skirt, or pair it with a bolder patchwork style fabric. If you’d rather let the olive top do the talking, opt for a classic denim skirt or shorts when choosing your bottoms.

Wear It Later: To make this look more cool-weather-ready, add a cozy knit cardi and dark wash denim jeans. Complement the top’s tassels by choosing a sweater with fringe, then finish off the look with a pair of brown, faux leather booties. Metallic statement earrings or bracelets will make the outfit pop, while pulling your hair back will let the lace-up details shine

Dorm Room DIY: 3 Easy (and Affordable!) Ways to Decorate Your Space

Thanks to their plain walls and unusually cramped quarters, dorms don’t always offer the best living situation. Luckily, there are lots of easy ways to make the space your own – while also incorporating this season’s hottest décor trends. From storage to accents to sets of wall art, we’re sharing our top tips and tricks for decorating your home away from home. Whether you’re moving into your first place or redecorating your current space, read on for three tutorials for DIY home décor.

Painted Storage Jars

Bronze and copper accents are among 2017’s hottest home décor trends, so these metallic mason jars are a dorm room must-have. Add glamour to your desk by using one as a pencil holder, or spice up your bathroom by filling it with hair and makeup brushes. You can even plant a succulent in one of these jars, transforming your summer greenery into a year-round decoration.

  3. Spray the inside of the jar with spray paint, then the rim of the jar if desired. Make sure to let the paint dry for 1-3 hours!
  4. Once dry, fill with pencils, brushes, succulents, etc.

Washi Tape Accent Wall

Washi tape has been a DIY staple for years, but using it to create accent walls is a brand new application. Made from natural fibers like bamboo, hemp or tree bark, washi is stronger than your average tape. It also comes in endless colors and designs – we chose copper to stay true to our metallic theme.

Scrapbook Paper Wall Art

You’ve likely used scrapbook paper in memory books and photo albums, but have you ever thought to use it to decorate your walls? Adding art to your space is easier (and more affordable) than ever – all it takes is a pack of scrapbook paper that matches your room’s color scheme. The best part about this hack? You can swap out the pages whenever you want, keeping your dorm décor fresh all year long.

Back-To-School Blues

Back-to-school season is just around the corner, so we’re partnering with some of our favorite bloggers to show us how they – and their kids! – style the season’s top trends. This week, we’re welcoming Lauren of Mrs. Weber’s Neighborhood to share her tips and tricks for taking your kiddos school shopping.

This fall starts a new chapter for our family – all three of my kids will be in school!

As much joy as it brings me (as a work-from-home mom who never catches a break during summer), it’s also a sad reminder that my kids are growing older and my time as the most important person in their life is fleeting.

Thankfully, there are some great reasons to love the back-to-school season, too – from getting back into a routine, to the smell of fresh pencils and the satisfaction of using a brand new box of crayons.

I look back fondly on my school years and the shopping that ensued before the first day. The biggest dilemma was choosing a color for my binder and selecting the perfect outfit for those first impressions. I remember how amazing I felt in my carefully chosen outfit for kindergarten: A blue dress with pink hearts coupled with crimped hair.

One-Stop Shopping At Meijer

With three kids to buy for, I love Meijer because it’s a one-stop shopping destination. I don’t need to hit up several stores or the mall – I am able to get everything I need under one roof, from snacks and clothing to shoes and school supplies.

I recently had the opportunity to shop with my kids and style them for fall. I love the cute clothes and fun supplies they chose!

Choosing a Shopping Theme

Picking a theme tends to help the choosing process with kids – whether it be athletic wear, sticking to a season, or even a color scheme.

My kids are all obsessed with the color blue, so we made it our mission to find items in that shade. It was like a fun scavenger hunt in the store, and it made shopping drama so much more bearable.

My oldest is entering first grade, so she knows what she needs – cute, yet comfortable clothing. She loves chasing friends on the playground, so solid shoes are a must.

With brands like L.A. Gear, Carter’s and Sketchers, I always know Meijer has something that will fit the bill.

As a person who could’ve lived in overalls during my youth, it was fun to see my childhood style come out in my daughter. She loves all the pockets for collecting rocks (which she is bound to come home with after recess).

She also loved the bold colors and cold shoulders in this outfit. I loved that the skirt has built-in shorts, which are crucial for playground play. A sturdy backpack is a must-have as well – to not only hold books and lunches, but also snowpants and boots when winter hits.

My middle gal is starting all-day Jr. Kindergarten and tends to be very particular about clothing. Feeling uncomfortable is a deal-breaker for her, so we tend to stick to cotton or silky fabrics.

She loved the scarf with this outfit, and who wouldn’t? Accessories shouldn’t just be for adults!

Additionally, we love the Falls Creek line at Meijer. The fun printed t-shirts and matching bottoms make getting dressed a cinch when the kids do it themselves – the items all coordinate, so it doesn’t matter what they choose!

My little guy will be entering preschool and is definitely the easiest one to dress right now. I’m a sucker for chambray, love how soft these shorts are, and how cute is the little whale on this graphic tee?

His shoes are made by Carter’s, and they are the perfect combo of dressy and practical due to the darker color. Also, I love that they wipe off easily! Crucial for little boy play.

Don’t forget the school supplies!

Of course it wouldn’t be back-to-school without supplies to coordinate, right? We love having the chance to grab a new backpack, lunchbox, water bottle and more. The kids were thrilled to choose their favorite prints and items for fall, and I was glad I could nab it all at Meijer.

With our new clothes ready to rock the first day of school, I’m feeling a little less blue as the big day approaches. I can’t wait to watch the kids grow and see what they learn this year!

Beauty Tutorial: The Best Products for Creating Perfect Eyebrows

As the summer sun begins to heat up, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their wardrobes for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming Meghan of Lincoln Park Minute to share her favorite products and makeup tips on how to create perfect eyebrows for summer.

Just as a few accessories can perfectly finish off your outfit, your eyebrows often complete your beauty look. They truly frame your face and I personally hate even leaving the house without mine done! Taking care of your eyebrows and manicuring them can often be overwhelming so today, I’m excited to share all that I know about how to do eyebrows and hope it may help you!

Before you tackle transforming your eyebrows, you’ll want to be sure you’re stocked up on all of the essentials. During a recent trip to Meijer, I picked up some of my eyebrow makeup favorites. I love that they have everything I need, including brow powder, wax, a pencil, a crayon, a brush, and colored gel. Meijer truly is a one-stop shop!

My eyebrow look starts with a pencil or crayon to fill in bare areas – then, I use a definer to make my brows look precisely shaped. To finish the look, I use a gel to lock them in place for long-lasting perfection!

Curious how to shape your eyebrows? To start, you’ll want to brush your eyebrows up and away and analyze what shaping they need. Take note of what areas are particularly sparse. To do this, I love using this my e.l.f. brow duo brush from Meijer because it has both a spoolie brush and an angled end great for applying brow powders and pomades.

As a guideline, your eyebrows should start parallel to the inner corner of your eye and end parallel to the outer corner of your eye. Where they arch is up to you, but mine naturally arch just about ¾ of the way in. If you have rogue hairs, quickly pluck them with a pair of tweezers.

Once you know the shape you want your brows to take, you can begin giving your eyebrows some more shape with either a brow pencil or crayon. I prefer to use a pencil to create natural hair like strokes, but if you want bold, statement-making brows, a brow crayon is the easy choice.

My L’Oreal Brow Stylist Definer is my ultimate favorite brow product found at Meijer. It’s precise, creamy, and blendable.  The ultra-fine pencil tip is a perfect tool for recreating tiny brow hair and precisely drawing and shaping brows for a well-defined look.

If you prefer a crayon, I’m a big fan of the Revlon ColorStay Brow Crayon (such cute packaging too!). After you create shape, brush through your eyebrows with a spoolie brush to soften the color you just laid down.

To fill in any remaining bare areas, I recommend using a brow powder like NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder. This one is so perfect to travel with since it’s small. It even includes two colors, a clear brow wax, a spoolie brush, and an angled brush. Similar to the brow pencil, you’ll want to try to create short, hair like strokes.

The idea is to create a natural eyebrow look, as if they’re your brows but better. Try to avoid uneven and harsh lines, but if you do run into this problem, just remember to brush through them!

Satisfied with the final product? Finish it all off with a colored brow gel like Maybelline New York Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara. This sets your brows and locks them into place so they stay put all day or night.

For a really natural look, I like to brush up the start of my eyebrows with my finger and make them look a little bit bushy. To keep the hairs this way, I use Wet n Wild Color Icon Brow Shaper, which is a clear brow wax pencil.

Voila! My everyday eyebrow look is complete after just these few simple steps and perfect products. Show off your summer brow look using #MeijerStyle to share your style.

Top ‘90s Trends to Try (Again!)

It’s no secret that ‘90s trends are back for spring and summer, and it’s taking us on a trip down a stylish memory lane. From chokers and velvet to old school blouses and jeans, we’re wishing we’d never cleaned out our closets from back then! However, the best part about these trends coming back is we can marry them with our favorite looks of 2017. If you’re ready to put a modern twist on your favorite ‘90s comebacks, check out our top five trends from the decade to try again.

meijer style 90s fashion trends accessories velvet shoes

1. Shoulder details

There’s no doubt shoulder details are having a moment in 2017, but they were also an iconic trend back in the ‘90s. While ‘90s fashion had us pulling one shoulder out of an oversized tee, today’s version is a little more intentional. From cold shoulder, to off-the-shoulder, to shirts with shoulder cutouts, this look is – and always has been – one of our summer faves. Channel your inner ‘90s gal and pair this trend with high-waisted denim, or opt for breezy soft shorts in hammered satin to put a modern spin on the outfit. And by the way, don’t be afraid to throw prints into the mix, too. Timeless patterns like floral will never go out of style!

2. Ruffled blouses

Vintage-inspired ruffles were a staple of ‘90s dress wear, but in this decade, we’re welcoming a more casual take on the look. We love this trend paired with light wash denim and sneakers (especially when the upper and shoelaces are made of velvet!). You can also transform this trend for work, so never fear – just tuck the top into dress pants or a high-waisted pencil skirt, then finish off the look with a pair of block heel sandals. Extra style points if you incorporate a choker + pendant necklace combo.

3. Menswear-inspired blazers

Oversized blazers aren’t just cozy, they’re also on trend right now. While this look featured pinstripes and wool fabric in the ‘90s, we put a feminine twist on our modern version of the suit. We can’t get enough of this silky, floral print material – and love how it looks when paired with an otherwise casual outfit, like this lingerie-inspired, lace tank. If you’re not into the juxtaposition of dressy and laidback styles, throw the blazer over top of a solid fitted sundress. The options are endless when it comes to this outerwear!

4. Statement jewelry

While your accessories no longer feature peace signs or yin and yang, the bold nature of ‘90s jewelry easily translates to modern trends. Statement necklaces and earrings add the perfect touch to present-day outfits, whether they highlight large pendants, beaded fringe or classic dangly hoops. Our favorite looks include all of the above, as there’s no better ode to ‘90s fashion than to stand out from the crowd. Pair your favorite pieces with a faux jumpsuit look created with closet staples of solid, fitted tanks and soft culotte bottoms in hammered satin.

meijer style 90s fashion trends accessories velvet shoes

5. Velvet shoes

We all remember having velvet in our closets as kiddos, and now this material is back in style in ways no one ever expected. From tennis shoes to “flatforms,” our favorite modern way to rock this fabric is on our feet! Go the simple route with slip on sandals or neutral, velvet sneakers – or make a statement with details like roses and pompoms. No matter your personal style, this is a ‘90s trend that everyone can pull off.

The Essential 4 Week Wedding Countdown

As the summer sun begins to heat up, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their wardrobes for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming Jess of The Golden Girl to share exactly what you need to do to prepare for an upcoming wedding – whether you’re the bride or a guest! – with a four week prep countdown covering everything from the perfect skin routine to picking out necessary undergarments.

So, you’re tying the knot this year? Congratulations! As a fellow bride-to-be, I can honestly say that being engaged has been one of the most exciting experiences in life thus far! However, it has also been one of the most stressful times as well.

The biggest piece advice I can give as your wedding date nears? Make a plan!

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

Of course, you’ve already got the flowers, the dress and the décor taken care of. But what about the little personal details – the steps necessary to get glowing skin, shiny hair, that sun-kissed glow, and more? The good news is, it’s not overly complicated! All it takes is a little planning ahead, and a few key products from Meijer.

Follow this four week countdown plan, and you’ll be smooth sailing!

Four Weeks Out: Glowing Skin Routine

Why start with skin? Because you’ll want to allow as much time for it to soak up the benefits of your new skincare routine! Keep it simple with a few key products to brighten, smooth and moisturize, and you’ll have a beautiful, healthy glow on your big day!

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

Start with a detoxifying and brightening face wash.

As you already know, the struggle to manage wedding stress is real, which can lead to a dull, uneven complexion. To combat this, I love using this L’Oreal clay cleanser, which turns into a luxurious mousse as you rub it into your skin. It’s comprised of charcoal – which is a magnet for oil and toxins – and, with regular use, leaves you with a much brighter, even complexion.

Clear pores.

I’ve used these strips from Biore for years, but I love them even more now that they’ve come out with a charcoal version! As mentioned above, charcoal is one of the most effective ingredients in ridding your pores of toxins and impurities, and these strips are essential for clearing pores! Plus, they reduce oil by up to 3X, which is key to making your makeup last on your big day! Apply one to wet skin after washing your face once per week.

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

Hydrate, balance and minimize pores with a mask.

Sheet masks are everywhere right now, for good reason, and this sheet mask from L’Oreal does not disappoint. It packs so many powerful benefits into one little 10 minute mask session! Another added benefit of sheet masks: you have to lie down to apply them. So you can think of it as a small moment of required relaxation.

diffuser in bathroom

Turn on your essential oil diffuser for an added treat as you let your mask do its magic! Afterword, your skin is super hydrated, your pores are minimized and your complexion is buttery smooth, allowing for a much smoother makeup application! Do this at least once per week.

Other tips: Remember, you are what you eat! Munch on as many dark, leafy greens as you can, as well as berries and grapes – all are chock full of vitamins and antioxidants that will make your skin glow from within! Meijer has an awesome selection of organic produce to choose from to make grocery shopping before your big day a lot easier.

Three Weeks Out: Strong, Shiny Hair

Another unfortunate side effect of wedding stress? Dull hair. Yikes! Three weeks out, start applying a hair mask after you shampoo. I love Garnier’s “Whole Blends” masks, which target different problem areas depending on your individual needs. My hair tends to be on the dry side, so I chose the Hydrating Blends Mask with Coconut Water and Vanilla Milk. The entire line is made of natural ingredients without harmful parabens that are found in a lot of other hair products!

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

To apply, shampoo your hair right away when you get in the shower, then follow with the mask. If you can, apply a shower cap over the top and let the hot shower steam amplify the benefits of the mask. Leave on for at least three minutes, but preferably longer. Rinse right before you get out, and style as usual.

Two Weeks Out: The Right Accessories

As your wedding nears closer, it’s time to start thinking about a few different accessories you’ll need to stock up on to prepare for the big day!

The “under” accessories

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

You’ve been thinking about the dress for months, but what about what you’re wearing under the dress? With so many backless and strapless dress styles now, it can be tough to find the right bra!

I have two favorites, both made by a brand called “Lingerie Solutions” which can be found in Meijer’s lingerie department. There are individual “adhesive bra” cups which are the best “barely there” solution. I also love the “Shantina Lite” molded adhesive cups, that will also give you a lot of “cinch” and “oomph” if you so please! The bra is also washable and reusable, so you’ll get a ton of wear out of it!

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

For underwear, go with something comfortable and nude colored, so you can ensure there won’t be any show through your white dress! Meijer has quite a few options, like this thong by Simple Pleasures – and a ton of shape wear too, if that’s more your style!

Hair + makeup accessories

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

Be prepared for hair and makeup mishaps and pack your MOH’s purse or makeup bag with extra bobby pins and hair ties (I love the Goody’s kind!) There will inevitably be hair snafus on the dance floor, and if you plan ahead, you can fix them in only a few seconds! (Because not jumping to “Shout” just because you’re afraid of your hair falling out would be an utter travesty).

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

I also love ELF’s duo lip primer and plumping stick, to ensure your lipstick stays on all night!

One Week Out: Polished Hands + Feet

Eeek! 7 days away! Time to start polishing those hands and feet!

By now, hopefully everything is planned out to a T, and you can really start to sit back and relax!

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

There’s no better way to do that than soaking in a warm bath and applying a luxurious salt scrub like Tree Hut’s Shea Sugar Scrub. Whole sugar grains will make your skin insanely smooth (especially the problem areas, like your feet!) and it’s made with Shea Nut Oil to lock in moisture. Plus, it’s made with all-natural extracts and is also paraben-free!

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

After applying the scrub, I like to rinse off and follow up with Jergens Natural Glow Firming lotion! It only takes a few days to start seeing a nice, natural-looking hint of glow. If you don’t want to opt for a spray tan on your big day, this is a really great natural-looking and budget-friendly way to get some color.

meijer style wedding prep countdown beauty skincare hair makeup accessories bridesmaid bride

For a great DIY pedicure and manicure, apply Cutex Moisture Rich foot cream to feet and paint nails with a pretty ballet pink color, which is the perfect neutral for your nuptials! My favorite is Essie’s Gel Couture no-chip nail polish in Fairy Tailor. It’s by far the longest lasting nail polish I’ve ever used, so you won’t have to worry about chipping as you’re stepping into your dress!

That’s it! Congratulations! You are officially ready for your big day!

Self-Tanner 101: How to Get a Streak-Free Faux Glow

As the summer sun begins to heat up, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their wardrobes for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming Lisa of LMP Collections to review all the top sunless tanning options and find the ideal product for the perfect faux glow.

sunless self tanner tan tanning blogger approved summer jergens neutrogena l'oreal lotion

Summer is here are hotter than ever! As much as I’d love to spend all my time outside during the sunny days, I just don’t have the free time during the weeks. There is nothing that makes me feel more confident in the summer while wearing dresses and swimsuits than having a nice tan to pair with them. I try to take advantage of the natural Vitamin D whenever I have the chance. Lately, however, I’ve been testing out some self-tanners from Meijer to give my skin that extra glow (and avoid some of the sun’s harmful rays).

I’ve tried out five different self-tanners (three brands) and am so excited to share with you all my honest and truthful opinion on each. Since I have more sensitive skin, I made it my goal to find a self-tanner that a) doesn’t make me orange, (b) is gentle on my skin, and (c) looks natural (no streaks or blotchiness). Below I breakdown each product and let you all know my personal experience with them, as well as which one of these five I will be re-purchasing again and again!

Jergens

When I was young, I remember seeing my older sister use Jergens. While shopping at Meijer, I went ahead and purchased these first, knowing it was a familiar brand.

When testing them out, I started with the lotion because who doesn’t want to “reduce the appearance of cellulite in as little as 7 days”!? That definitely was the selling factor for me. After being pretty excited to try this one, I made the mistake of using this lotion not too long after shaving my legs. Although it did happen to irritate my skin, the irritation went away after a few hours.

As for the foam version, a little goes a long way. I felt this one dries more saturated and works quicker than the squeeze bottle, so I would definitely use the foam again. They both smell amazing, too!

sunless self tanner tan tanning blogger approved summer jergens neutrogena l'oreal lotion

Orange? These definitely did not make me orange – which I liked! Both do take a few days to see a noticeable color transformation, but that’s nice because you can control your color at a slower rate – love.

Gentle? Honestly, I would say these ones were the most irritating on my sensitive skin. However, my arms felt much more gentle than my legs – so just watch recently-shaved skin!

Natural? Overall, I would say both of these were very natural-looking.

sunless self tanner tan tanning blogger approved summer jergens neutrogena l'oreal lotion

L’Oreal

Now this stuff is summer in a bottle! One of my friends recommended a try out L’Oreal for a darker summer glow, and she was not kidding around. The lotion is a rich brown color, and you can definitely see major results in less than 24 hours. Initially, this one scared me a bit since the lotion is so dark, but it goes on pretty smooth and even.

Of all the options, L’Oreal was my least favorite smell – not bad by all means, it’s just that the other four are much more appealing. Lastly, the L’Oreal tanner has a noticeable shimmer to it, so this would probably be the best fit for specific occasions or a night out with the girls.

sunless self tanner tan tanning blogger approved summer jergens neutrogena l'oreal lotion

Orange? I would not say this one gives off an “orange” tint but it is definitely the most saturated of the bunch.

Gentle? Surprising yes! I wasn’t sure that would be true because of the shimmer, but overall this was very gentle.

Natural? Yes! Like the others, apply this one as evenly as possible and you won’t see any streaks.

Neutrogena

And here we have it, my favorite brand out of the three! I was incredibly impressed with these products, and my absolute favorite was the spray bottle version.

Neutrogena is my overall pick because of how gentle it felt on my skin. I didn’t once feel any irritation and could see glowy, natural-looking results in less than 24 hours. The only reason I liked the spray version better is simply because it’s a bit easier to apply. But though it sprays pretty evenly, I would still recommend rubbing everything in just to be safe. I also definitely recommend spraying this in a well-ventilated area because, since it’s a spray, it tends to travel.

Orange? None whatsoever.

Natural? YES YES YES! I was so impressed and can’t wait to continue using this product.

Gentle? Definitely. I always know it’s a product for me when it doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. And I feel like Neutrogena has always been known as a gentler brand!

No matter which self-tanner you go with, some things will always apply. So here are my top “must-do” tips!

  • Rub in the product as evenly as possible
  • After applying, wear baggy clothing until lotion, foam or spray is completely soaked in and dry
  • Ask someone to help do your back if it’s hard to reach – you’d hate to leave an untouched spot!
  • Apply once a day for a few days (or for special occasions) for an even, glowy look
