How to Host the Perfect Memorial Day Picnic

As the spring chill finally gives way to summer warmth, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their wardrobes for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming Amanda of Girl About Columbus to share her home décor and style ideas and tips for the perfect Memorial Day-themed picnic for families and friends.

With Memorial Day just around the corner my mind has officially wandered to summer plans, which primarily means picnics, camping and cookouts – whether that’s in the heat of the sun or in the shade next to a peaceful creek among family and friends. I particularly can’t wait for summertime picnics, and Meijer has the most gorgeous and trendy (yet classic) outdoor picnic essentials for Memorial Day (and the Fourth of July)!

Admittedly, I went a little crazy when I saw all of the Americana picnic products at Meijer! We are re-doing our deck this summer, and I’ve already started decorating with red, white and blue. Naturally, my mind tends to think in practicality, and I knew all of the products I purchased for my American picnic could also be used for all of our outdoor dining needs this season. Such a bonus!

Nothing screams an American holiday like the classic red, white and blue plaid tablecloth I picked up! The colors are especially rich in-person, it can double-up as a picnic blanket, and the plaid pattern provides the perfect backdrop for an assortment of other fun Meijer picnic goodies!

I also had to have Meijer’s white lantern that comes equipped with an LED light. The lantern makes for a sweet centerpiece for a fun picnic and you can also use it inside well after summer is over. The glowing flicker of a candle is always calming and cozy, whether authentic or artificial.

When I saw the small and large blue and white ceramic fish bowls, I instantly snagged both! The fish shape is so unique and who doesn’t love a huge white bowl for picnics and gatherings? SO useful and versatile.

An ice-cold glass of Riesling or Rosé pairs so very well with the laid-back menu of a picnic, but glass wine glasses do not! Meijer has the most delightful set of plastic wine glasses that look as if they are real glass. The shape of the bowl is on-trend, and you would never know they are plastic – until you pick them up, of course! Also, water is a must at a hot summer picnic! I poured ice-water into the blue carafe I picked up to fill up these blue melamine glasses.

The tan scalloped placements added an element of texture to the tablescape and will be used both inside and outside for dining. For even more character, I discovered rope drink and plate coasters that added a fun nautical vibe to the picnic.

This red, white and blue snack bowl set is essential for tasty nuts and fruits. Plus, the blue melamine 3-section dish is ideal for serving a veggie tray. Also, when I ventured outside of the seasonal themed aisle at Meijer, I found the perfect blue pie plate for my blueberry pie as well as a wooden cheese board that is the sweetest size for a cheese, cracker and/or fruit tray.

To add to the theme of American alfresco dining – and also to forgo the plastic route for an easy-breezy touch of class – I added in blue-handled silverware, red, white and blue melamine plates, white melamine bowls (that have cute blue fish on the side!) and pretty chambray napkins. Throwing in a couple of navy outdoor pillows was the finishing touch for a fuss-free, comfortable and relaxed vibe: Just how summer should be.

I found this new L’oreal Air Dry It Wave Swept Spray that provides 24-hour shape control without weighing my hair down or feeling crunchy!

Ladies, USE YOUR SUNSCREEN! I know you all want to look like bronzed goddesses this summer, and you totally can while protecting your skin by using Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration! It’s a weightless, barely-there sunscreen that provides not only SPF 30 protection, but also 12-hour moisture. It’s light, fast-absorbing and smells like you’re in the tropics!”

“What girl doesn’t love getting her nails done? Whenever I paint my nails, I choose colors that speak to what I’m currently feeling. These shades are great for getting ready for summer – since right now I’m feeling cute and fun!

The white shade is Blanc by Essie, which can also be used as a base coat if you want other colors to pop even brighter on their own. The pink shade I went with is Secret Story by Essie, which is totally sink-your-toes-in-the-sand-worthy. It’s perfect for that summer vacation in Miami, or a lighthouse in Rhode Island, or even for that getaway weekend in Vegas. This color is great for when you’re feeling extra girly and are just ready to shake it!”

To prep your hair for the summer’s humidity, check out Brittany’s top picks to keep your locks moisturized and healthy!

“I have what I consider to be salon-dependent hair. It’s painfully thick, coarse and color-treated. And if that wasn’t high maintenance enough, I recently got bangs. Not the wispy push them to the side, pin them back if you get tired of them kind. Real honest-to-goodness blunt bangs.

I’m still trying really hard to accept my new fringe lifestyle, but will resist giving them up and growing them out. The temptation is strong, so I just keep telling myself that they’re a fresh new look for spring and are super flattering on my face.

Although I have “salon-dependent hair,” I don’t often have a “salon-friendly” product budget, and that’s a big deal. Because I invest a lot of time and money into the maintenance of my locks, finding products at affordable prices that protect that investment is my number one priority, and I’m going to share with you my top three must-haves to make that happen.

Confession: I only wash my hair twice a week. My hair is extremely thick and color-treated and my scalp is dry, so I am looking for a product that not only prevents fading, but keeps my scalp flake-free and any oil at bay. I am currently obsessed with OGX Treetree Mint Shampoo and Conditioner. This is a sulfate-free product line, which keeps my color intact, and the tea tree oil tingles my scalp, keeps it healthy and gets rid of any of that pesky dry scalp flaking that many of us have, but no one wants to talk about.

I was introduced to It’s A 10 by my hair stylist, and I’ve never looked back. I have broken many a wide tooth comb trying to get my wet hair brushed out, but It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Conditioner has solved that problem completely. I simply spritz my hair after a towel dry, and it makes my hair manageable, as well as ultra-silky and shiny when it dries.

blogger beauty makeup summer style product hair

So about those bangs. While I may be perfectly okay washing my hair a few times a week, my bangs did not get the memo. Because they sit on my forehead, they are the first spot to get oily, requiring more than bi-weekly washing. That is, until I embraced dry shampoo.

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Dry Shampoo is a miracle and a mandatory part of my morning routine, especially as we head into warmer temperatures. I wake up, spray my bangs at the root, then go about my beauty prep as the dry shampoo gets to work soaking up any oil. Then, before I leave for the morning, I give my bangs a quick brush, diffusing the powder, and my bangs are dry, clean and texturized. I live to rock fringe another day.”

The Best Ideas for Decorating Your Outdoor Deck

As the spring chill finally gives way to summer warmth, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their wardrobes for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming Nina of The HSS Feed to share her tips and tricks on the best ways of decorating your deck space into an outdoor retreat.

I am so happy that things are finally warming up around here, and am looking forward to spending as much time outside as possible during these beautiful summer months!

Meijer outdoor garden deck entertaining space

As we’ve started to see more sunshine here in Michigan, I’ve been turning my attention to getting our patio and outdoor spaces ready for everything from weeknight grilling to weekends with the kids spent in the sprinklers and making s’mores.

Meijer outdoor garden deck entertaining space

No matter the size of your outdoor space, I think you can easily get that light and bright summer feeling by adding plants, flowers and pops of color with outdoor décor.

Meijer outdoor garden deck entertaining space

I hardly consider myself to have a green thumb – actually quite the opposite! However, along with adding some green elements to our patio, I wanted to create some gardening projects to work on with my five-year-old, who could not have been more excited about his brand new Spider-Man gardening gloves!

Meijer outdoor garden deck entertaining space

You could certainly go big with lots of vegetables, herbs and flowers in planters around your patio. But I decided to start off slowly and picked up a pretty terra cotta planter that would serve as our first project. Because we are big Tex-Mex fans, I chose to do a small “salsa garden” with a tomato plant, cilantro and oregano, along with pansies to add some color. Pansies are also edible and I’ll plan on putting them in some summer salads.

Meijer outdoor garden deck entertaining space

I also picked up these strawberry plants in the Meijer outdoor department – it was bonus that they were already planted and off to a good start! The planters themselves were great for adding height and interest to a bare area of our patio. They actually came with hooks so you could hang them from your porch as well. But since we don’t have a space to hang them, I chose to stagger them on the patio wall. These would also be great if you have a small space or balcony to add some color and sweetness.

Meijer outdoor garden deck entertaining space pillow

Your outdoor sitting space is great place to add those pops of color and interest with bright pillows, an umbrella and fun solar umbrella lights to add ambiance on summer nights.

And don’t forget to pick up new plastic or melamine glasses and dinnerware to enjoy eating outdoors without the worry of breaking anything.

What are you most looking forward to about outside time this summer?

From keeping it clean to styling the perfect ‘do, haircare in the summer can be a LOT of work. Luckily, I’ve found my favorite tried-and-true products to get you to your best hair day yet – today and all summer long! Read on for an easy tutorial on how to take care of naturally textured hair.

When it comes to using products on my natural hair, Cantu is a brand that I trust and love.  When cleansing my hair, I use the Cantu Complete Conditioning Co-Wash and Cantu Repair Deep Conditioner for my regimen.  The co-wash is great for cleansing the scalp and hair follicles to get your past product out of there.  It doesn’t lather, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t working because co-washing is safer and better for the hair anyway. This creamy product actually includes a whopping 15+ natural butters and oils – you can’t beat that! The best part of it is that it leaves your hair feeling clean and full of moisture. This is the first step in helping my curls to pop when I want to wear my natural hair, or even if I’m prepping it for a protective style.

I love to follow the co-wash with Cantu’s leave-in conditioning repair cream!  This product helps to lock in moisture for the entire Queen treatment for those luscious curls, and it keeps them healthy, shiny and strong.

It’s amazing when you can find different uses for products that were meant for one purpose. I love using Got2B Glued in order to keep my lace-front wigs in place! It’s super safe for my hair line, and lays my natural edges perfectly. Simply use a toothbrush to apply!

But keep in mind: a little goes a long way!  Just a little bit for a seamless look, and you don’t have to worry about your wig moving all day!  Depending on how you wrap your hair at night you can get this product to last for a few days.

For wig styling, I like to use a NYX HD Concealer. Since this shade pairs well with my skin tone, it’s perfect for creating the appearance of scalp on a wig. I just love this product for this finished look!

I had such a great time pampering myself with these products from Meijer and styling this beautiful look. Now go enjoy the weather and your beautiful selves!

The Easiest Last-Minute Gift Idea for Mother’s Day

As the spring chill finally gives way to summer warmth, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their wardrobes for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming blogger Kendall Rayburn to share how to put together the perfect gift your mom will love this Mother’s Day.

Hello, there! Today I have the honor of hanging out here on the Meijer Style blog to share my tips for putting together the perfect Mother’s Day gift! I absolutely love shopping Meijer for gifts because I can get everything I need in one stop.

I spent about an hour browsing my local Meijer for the perfect picks for Mother’s Day, and I can’t wait to show you what I found! I got gift items, tissue paper, a card – everything I needed for the perfectly packaged Mother’s Day gift. Now, let’s put it all together!

Choosing the Container:

When choosing the gift container, keep your recipient in mind. Like me, my momma loves all things rustic, and I just knew she’d go crazy for this cute wooden box. It has twine handles on either side, and she can re-purpose it after opening her gift (how cute would this be in a guest bathroom to hold hand towels, toilet paper and soaps?)

Personalizing the Gift:

Think about your mother or mother figure: what kind of things do they love? What would they want to receive? For my mom (and almost every other mom on the planet) photos of loved ones really are at the top of their list.

I picked up these adorable frames with the same rustic look as the box and added in two photos. One frame has a photo of my boys holding hands, the other is a photo of my mom with both boys at a hot air balloon festival. It was such a special day, and it’s also a tradition (we go every year), so I know she’d love this photo to remember it all.

One thing I inherited from my mom was a love of coffee. I spotted this super cute mug that’s full of color and flowers – perfect for my Mom’s gift.

Meijer also has a variety of these hilarious little signs. This yoga one really rings true to me because my mom and I have been talking about joining a yoga class for months and still haven’t, so I know this is going to make her laugh!

What’s something that all moms love? CANDLES. I found this adorable hammer copper candle that is multi-use. Once you’ve burned the candle, simply clean out the inside and plant the tag in some dirt to turn it into a planter – so cool!

easy present gift idea mother's day mom

I also picked up this peace + tranquility candle, which is perfect for lighting while taking a long soak in the tub, or just anytime relaxation is needed (which, for most moms, is often!)

My mom loves plants, and this adorable faux succulent was perfect for her gift because it’s something she can keep forever. No need to water this little guy, he’ll stay as green and adorable as the day it was bought. The planter it’s in is also super trendy with a modern, cement look. If you want to personalize this even further, you could decorate the outside (or have your kiddos add their handprints).

Choosing the Card:

It’s so hard for me to choose a greeting card. I have to read about 15 of them before I settle on the perfect one. Sound familiar? My husband always jokes that my cards always make people cry, and I guess it’s kind of true. I mean, who wouldn’t want to choose a card that makes the recipient actually feel something real?

Wrapping it Up:

I love putting everything together into one package after shopping! My favorite material to incorporate is tissue paper because it adds that extra bit of oomph to make the multiple gift ideas feel like one present. For this gift I chose two tissue papers: one plain white and one patterned with small white hearts. I thought the mix of beige and white perfectly fit the items in the gift, and that overall rustic feel.

To properly package the gift, I always start by laying down a few sheets of tissue paper in the container before arranging items (tallest and biggest items in the back), and then fan out the excess paper at the edges of the gift.

easy present gift idea mother's day mom

Didn’t this gift turn out so cute? I used all of the tissue paper to add height to different items, and made sure to add some behind the frames as well to give it a little flare. That heart-patterned tissue paper is just so cute and perfect for the holiday!

I cannot wait to gift this to my momma this weekend – she is just going to love it! If you’ve still got Mother’s Day shopping on your to-do list, be sure to stop by Meijer to pick up everything you need!

What are YOUR plans for Mother’s Day?

Facial Must-Have: Olay ProX Microdermabrasion and Cleaning System
This was the first time I had ever tried any skincare technology before. The system is easy to use, has three speeds, and Olay even provides a suggested schedule of use to make the most of the different attachments and cleansers. I was a little worried it wouldn’t be gentle enough on my skin, but I read through the directions and was pleasantly surprised at how gentle the brush and foam heads were. They give a great tip to apply minimal pressure and move the attachments around in gentle circles. My skin always feels so smooth after using it.

Facial Must-Have: Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Treatment Mask
This year it seems that technology is everything. Mobile tech, wearable tech and now skincare tech! Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Mask is my newest skincare obsession. It has blue and red lights that targets bacteria and reduces any inflammation. Match made in heaven!

Facial Must-Have: Yes to Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask
I don’t care what anyone says; face masks are the bomb. Although using one face mask isn’t going to cure your acne instantly, I think investing in a few different options and making it into a weekly habit can make a difference. My favorite is the Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask by Yes to Tomatoes. (Yes to Avocado face wipes are my all time favorite btw.) This mask is made to fight acne.

Facial Must-Have: L’Oreal Pure-Clay Mask, Detox & Brighten
I’m also always looking for ways to brighten and detoxify my skin from the makeup I wear every day. On Fridays, I use the L’Oreal Detox & Brighten Clay Mask ($7.99 at Meijer) to remove the stressful week and its toll on my skin. I love, love, love clay masks, but I especially love this one because it combines charcoal and three different kinds of pure clay to tighten my skin and remove pesky blackheads. I leave the mask on for 15 minutes before I go to bed, and then I rinse it off with warm water and moisturize.

Style Expert: Danielle
Blog: Lou What Wear
Facial Must-Have: Freeman Avocado & Oatmeal Clay Mask
To keep me refreshed all week, this Clay & Avocado mask has been placed prominently by my sink. On hand and ready to go when I have ten free minutes and need a little R&R. I love throwing these masks on when I’m picking up stuff around my house or putting away laundry. It’s an easy way to make a 10-minute chore into something a little bit better. Basically, anything to make to-do’s a little more manageable.

Summer Outfit Inspiration: 4 Casual Dresses to Add to Your Wardrobe

As the spring chill finally gives way to summer warmth, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up their wardrobes for warm weather styles.

This week we’re welcoming Maya of Charmingly Styled to share her four favorite casual dresses for summer and how to style each of the one-piece-wonders!

After waiting months for warmer weather in the Midwest, I can finally say the summer season is upon us! Showers aside, the weather is starting to warm up and I’m excited to see the sun return after months of hibernation. Most of all, I’m happy that it’s officially dress weather, and I’ve been busting out a few of my favorites from last year – as well as adding a few new looks to my closet, too. I recently scooped up a few trendy dresses at my local Meijer store in Chicago, and not only are they super cute, but they’re affordable too! To celebrate the weather, here are a few of my favorite looks for the season at a price that can’t be beat.

Striped for Summer

striped-blue-dress

I’m a big sucker for stripes 365 days of the year, but there’s something about the perfect striped dress for summer that gets me extra excited. I’ve never met a stripe I don’t like, and when I spotted this blue and white nautical number at Meijer, I knew I had to add it to my closet ASAP. It’s perfect for weekends walking around Chicago neighborhoods, or even for more casual days around the office. Paired with a fresh pair of tennis shoes and a statement gold necklace (both from Meijer), I’m ready to tackle my day in the perfect comfy look.

Boho Vibes

This season is all about putting embroidery on everything – and honestly, I’m not mad about it. As a flower child at heart, finding the perfect bohemian dress at a steal was like hitting the jackpot, and I absolutely adore this classic, loose fitting dress for summer traveling and exploring the city. It’s comfy, flattering and looks good with a simple pair of sandals and a delicate gold necklace. It’s important to not go too overboard with a dress that’s all about the little details – you always want to make sure the embroidery steals the show!

Chambray Chic

Chambray is one of those trends that will always be in style, so whenever I find a beautiful, light chambray dress, I can’t help but make a home for it in my closet. I recently found this one at Meijer and loved the flattering cut and the tulip sleeved detailing (one of summer’s hottest dress trends this year!) I paired the look with a chunky rose gold necklace and this beautiful fringe purse I also scored for a steal at Meijer – isn’t it gorgeous?!

Tied in a Knot

This is one of those new-to-me trends that I’ve been loving these days, and dresses and shirts with a little knot are the perfect, casual look for spring and summer. It’s a minor detail, but adding a knot creates a cute cinched waist look with your favorite cotton dresses. I found this striped version at Meijer and knew that I had to have it for summer – especially with the $20 price tag! It’s perfect with metallic flats and my new go-to fringe purse I’m planning to rock all season long.

Have any summer trends you’re living for these days? Please share! We’d also love to know what Meijer summer pieces you’ve scooped up this season so far!

3 Stylish (and Comfy) Alternatives to Your Go-To Pair of Leggings

As spring begins to peek around the corner, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for a new year of style.

This week we’re welcoming Andrea of Blonde Bedhead to share a few stylish, yet comfortable alternatives to your go-to pair of leggings – including joggers, soft shorts and culottes!

I’m guilty of occasionally leaving the house in a pair of leggings and crewneck sweatshirt—comfortable yes, but doesn’t inspire much style. Whether you’re running errands or grabbing dinner with friends, jogger pants, soft shorts and culottes are a few great alternatives to consider for legging-level comfort, but high-level style.

Jogger Style

Joggers are an easy, chic replacement for leggings. They’re just as cozy, but with an athleisure vibe—so I styled this outfit as such. My love for distressed denim also transcends to this pair of joggers because they have knee rips. It gives the jogger pants a bit of an edge, which I always gravitate towards!

I added a crop top, a pair of running shoes and a silky olive green bomber that I also snatched up at Meijer. I love the oatmeal tone of the joggers and olive green tones for spring, just a few neutral shades I’m wearing on repeat so far this season.

Soft Short Style

Now that we’re creeping into summer, high-waisted shorts like these are a great option for hot, humid days. Tuck in a billowy top, add a crop top or wear with a body suit—there really are so many styling choices when it comes to a pair of versatile shorts.

I added a jean jacket and platform oxfords to keep a more casual style. But what I love about these shorts is you could easily add a pair of pumps and leather jacket to style for cocktails!

Culotte Style

Culottes are universally flattering and equally as comfortable as leggings. The pant style can work for any occasion — I regularly rock them for client meetings with a structured top, or for brunch and shopping with friends with an off-the-shoulder shirt (like this!).

The culottes from Meijer come in several colors, but a black pair transitions well from season-to-season, making them easy to re-style! I paired my culottes with this fun take on the off-the-shoulder trend, another great top I scored from Meijer in olive green. It also comes in blush, which was a difficult decision to make, since I’m digging both blush and olive green tones this season!

The Comfiest Summer Clothing Trends to Try Right Now

Beyond the warm temps that summer is known and loved for, the season also brings carefree clothing trends that we’re (always!) obsessed with. The best part about the hottest styles of 2017? They’re insanely cute – and insanely comfortable. We can’t get enough of this year’s soft, summery outfits, so we’re sharing four of our favorites to serve as inspiration throughout the season.

Flowy Shirt + Pants

Gone are the days when pairing a flowy top with wide bottoms was a fashion “don’t” – now, it’s a fashion “please do!” Just be sure to complete the combo with cork wedges vs. flats to give your outfit the length it needs to look totally balanced. We especially love this chic ensemble for summer, as you can easily incorporate other seasonal trends like bold colors, floral print, ruffles and shoulder details. In fact, our favorite part of this combo is how the striking, red culottes accent the dark, flowery pattern. And did you notice these bright turquoise earrings? Small details make such a difference when highlighting shades in a colorful print!

Wide Leg Jumpsuits

From gauchos to palazzo pants, bottoms with a wide, loose silhouette are one of our favorite trends this summer. When you combine this look with the ever-popular jumpsuit, your outfit reaches a whole new level of cute (and comfort!). Plus, this one-piece wonder is extra trendy, thanks to the vibrant embroidery featured around the scoop style neckline. To ensure you don’t take away from those delicate details, skip the pendant or statement necklace and opt for a choker or bare neck instead. The intricate, embroidered design is a statement in itself! Finally, complete the look with a pair of black block heel sandals for a fiercely classic ensemble that’s sure to turn heads.

Soft Tee + Shorts

A basic graphic tee and loose patterned shorts are the perfect combination for a sunny day on the beach. The soft, cottony fabric is breathable (great for high temps) and comfortable (perfect for an afternoon filled with activities!). For an extra summery vibe, knot your tee at the bottom, then balance out the look by choosing high-waisted shorts. We can’t get enough of this boho-inspired pair – the elaborate pattern of the bottoms perfectly complements the simplicity of the top! Finish this ensemble with natural hair, “no makeup” makeup and classic cork sandals (or sneakers!) for an effortlessly casual outfit your friends will envy.

Bodysuit + Shorts

If you’re looking for an ensemble that embodies the athleisure trend to a tee, pair an active-inspired short with an off-the-shoulder bodysuit. We went the monochromatic route with a white top and black bottom, but don’t be afraid to rock your favorite summer shades. Pink and yellow are our go-to colors this season! When it comes to footwear, this outfit could be paired with your gym shoes or basic sandals – both are totally comfy and would look fabulous. Finally, pull your hair into a trendy half top knot, letting your natural hair texture shine in the bottom half of the style.

2 Easy (and Adorable!) Ways to Style Medium-Length Hair for Spring

As spring begins to peek around the corner, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for a new year of style.

This week we’re welcoming Melissa from The Bee’s Knees to share two must-try ways to style medium-length hair, from an everyday look to a boho-inspired updo!

Styling a bob or “lob” (long bob) is super easy and fun – plus, it’s a great length for when spring or summertime rolls around. The temps get higher, your hair gets shorter! If you’re looking for a change, trying to cool off for the season, or are just a busy mom like me who likes low-maintenance style, you might want to try a bob or “lob” haircut.

My hair has grown out some (so I’m definitely in the “lob” stage), but don’t worry! The practical styles I’m sharing today work great with long OR short bobs. But before we get into my favorite medium-length looks, take a peek at my must-have styling products for spring:

Right now, I’m loving Revlon’s 1¼ inch barrel curling iron. It creates large, loose and luxurious curls that look perfectly laidback! If you need a little texture to achieve this beach-ready ‘do, L’Oreal Air Dry It Wave Swept Spray is great for hot summer styling. I’ve also been using OGX Argan Oil of Morocco, Goody scallop-cut headbands and L’Oreal Lock It hairspray – we’ll need all of these tools for the styles below, so stay tuned. Also pictured above is my favorite hairbrush of all time – the Wet Brush! This amazing product is available at Meijer and works so well for fine OR coarse hair. No tugging or pulling involved!

Now that you know which products you need to succeed, here are my two easy, adorable styles for short hair.

CASUAL, EVERYDAY CURLS

This is my everyday, fool-proof, easy-breezy style. I love it because if you have semi-fine hair (like me) that grabs curl really well, sometimes the curls will last for days! That means less heat and less damage to the hair. I am a firm believer in dry shampoo, which I’ll talk about later, and that is my go-to for fresh hair in a pinch – always!

Step 1: First, you’ll want to start with freshly washed and blow-dried hair.

Step 2: Then, apply this OGX Argan Oil of Morocco (about a dime size) evenly over your strands.

Step 3: Use a Revlon 1¼ inch barrel curling iron to style your whole head, making sure the ringlets twist away from your face. If you’re not totally sure how to do this, the hair should curl over top of the iron, not underneath.

When you’re finished, the curls will appear fairly tight, but don’t brush them out until you’ve styled your entire head.

Step 4: Now, run your fingers through your hair to gently pull and loosen the curls.

Step 5: Mist a fine coat of hairspray all over your locks, then voila! You’re done! Big, beautiful, loose curls in a snap.

BOHO-INSPIRED UPDO

Alright, now let’s talk updos! This is one of my favorite ways to wear my hair up. It’s easy and has a little ‘bohemian’ flair to it. I picked up a cute pack of Goody headbands at Meijer and worked them into this style!

Step 1: First, you’ll want to start with hair that’s a few days dirty. I know that sounds weird, but really, it’s true. Any hairstylist will tell you that updos work far better on hair that’s got some day 3 or 4 texture to it.

If you really want to wear your hair up the first or second day after washing it, try using dry shampoo to add some texture to your hair. I love ‘Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo!’

Step 2: Next, add the headband and pull a chunk of your bangs forward. Make sure you get a big enough section!

Step 3: Pull your hair into a tight ponytail.

Step 4: Wrap your strands around the elastic so your pony becomes a bun, and then secure it with Goody bobby pins.

Step 5: Grab the front section of hair and start braiding it until you reach the end. Secure it temporarily with a ponytail holder if you need to, then go through the braid and grab at sections to loosen it a bit.

Step 6: Finally, remove the ponytail holder from your bangs (if you used one), then take the braid and wrap it up and around the back of your bun. Secure it into the base of the style with more Goody bobby pins, then finish with some L’Oreal Lock It hairspray.

That’s it! Short hair-styling is so fun and easy! I hope you’ll give these looks a try sometime.

The Best Sandals for Every Summer Occasion

It’s a tale as old as time – you’re about to walk out the door to attend one of many summer events, and all you want in the world are shoes that are cute AND comfy. You’ll be dancing the evening away at a wedding or spending date night walking on the beach (hey, a girl can dream!), and now, all you need is the perfect sandal.

Cork slip-ons are as sensible as they are trendy, so we’re sharing four ways to style them – no matter where your summer takes you!

Date Night

Since summer date night is the perfect excuse to rock flirty prints and florals, complete your look with simple sandals in a crisp, solid color. This way, your shoes will complement your outfit, rather than taking command of it! For example, our favorite part of this ensemble is how the footwear accents the romper’s pattern – the white totally brightens up the outfit as a whole. P.S. If you’re not a romper kind of gal, these slip-ons also look adorable with a trendy, printed mini dress.

Casual Wedding

If you’ve been invited to a summer wedding with a casual dress code, it’s the perfect opportunity to wear comfy shoes (and dance in them all night long!). We love this sleeveless, chambray dress paired with strappy floral sandals – the simplicity of the outfit really lets the shoes shine! To draw more attention to your dainty, colorful footwear, choose accessories that match a hue featured in the summery print. A burgundy statement necklace or earrings would complete this look in the best way (tips for styling statement jewelry are on MeijerStyle.com here!).

Baby Shower

For days spent showering moms-to-be and playing games like “pink or blue,” choose a dressier pair of slip-ons like this rose gold style. Metallic shoes in any shade look great with dainty, pastel hues (I mean, we seriously can’t get enough of this chiffon kimono + sandal ensemble). This look is also a must-try for summer bridal showers, but take care to stay away from white – you don’t want to overshadow the guest of honor!

Weekend Brunch

For casual mornings with your girls when all you need is bacon and eggs, pair tan cork sandals with denim capris and an embroidered tank. An earthy tone like tan perfectly complements this olive top, and embroidered details bring a laidback, bohemian vibe to your look. Casual (and sensible) slip-ons are a perfect match for this outfit! If the day is extra sunny and you’ll be brunching on a patio, these shoes also look amazing with a flowy, neutral sundress.

If you don’t have a pair of cork sandals (or four) at home, get over to your local Meijer A-S-A-P! There’s nothing better than a versatile, cute and comfy shoe.

5 Must-Have Jackets Under $50

As spring begins to peek around the corner, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for a new year of style.

This week we’re welcoming Candace of Live Love & Read to share her favorite spring jackets to combat the season’s unpredictable weather – and all are under $50!

There’s no doubt about it, Mother Nature is serving it to us. One day it’s a glorious 65 degrees, and the next it’s 45. Being a born-and-bred Southern gal, it doesn’t really make sense to me. However, word on the street is that this is pretty typical of the Midwest. Sigh.

If you are anything like me, it is highly likely that you are ready to put away all of those chunky sweaters and opt for something a little lighter and more transitional for the day-to-day unpredictability of this spring weather. If that’s the case, jackets are about to become your new best friend.

Without question, completing your outfit with a jacket is the perfect way to give your look a bit more edge. Additionally, layering with a jacket gives YOU the power to prepare for the weather however you need to. You can go heavier or lighter, sleeves or no sleeves, hood or no hood – the sky is the limit! With a jacket as your primary statement piece for the spring season, you get to control how the weather affects you.

Now that you’ve wrapped your head around this ingenious style concept, you need some inspo! Not to worry, I’ve got you covered with five spring jackets under $50. Yes, UNDER $50.

Denim Jacket with a Twist

I’ve always appreciated a classic denim jacket, but there is something extra special about a denim jacket with a twist. This hooded beauty by Massini is absolutely perfect for the spring season. You get the structure of a denim jacket, with a much more relaxed vibe. There are two great features about this particular jacket: the textured sleeves and detachable hood. Both make this jacket more enjoyable to wear, as the fabric is a bit more breathable than a traditional denim jacket. This is the epitome of a “transitional spring piece.”

The Trendy Bomber

The bomber jacket trend gained major momentum in 2016 – and from the looks of it, the trend is also making major strides in 2017! The beauty of a bomber jacket is that it can be worn with nearly anything. You can dress it up or dress it down and either way, you are guaranteed to make a statement. While bombers vary in fabrics, it is most frequently designed with one that’s lightweight and breathable, which makes it perfect for spring. If you don’t have a bomber jacket in your closet, you definitely need one! According to the Fashion Powers-At-Be, the bomber is the lead player in the outerwear department.

Classic Denim Jacket

Without question, every woman needs a go-to denim jacket. Why? Because it’s classic and will most definitely stand the test of time. Furthermore, it’s a great piece to have in your arsenal when battling unpredictable weather. You can layer denim as heavy or lightly as you need to. Say you start the day by wearing it on, due to cool temperatures, and by day end you are wearing it draped across your shoulders. Much like the bomber jacket, denim also offers optimal versatility. You can dress it up or down!

The Sleeveless Trench Vest

For those particularly warm days that have a slight breeze, the sleeveless trench vest is an ideal option. It keeps you just warm enough and allows optimal mobility. Overall, it’s a much more casual piece and a great choice for those days that you just need a little something extra to layer.

Effortlessly Chic Open Front Jacket

Looking for a dressy, yet effortlessly chic jacket? This trendy blazer was made for YOU. The open front feature allows this jacket to be pretty transitional, as you can slip it on and off super easily. Furthermore, the ruched quarter sleeves give this piece a more playful tone, which allows it to be styled a bit more easily as well (since it’s more relaxed than your traditional blazer).

As you can see, there are a number of ways you can win the fight against Mother Nature and her unpredictable ways. All it requires is the correct jacket arsenal and you can conquer the world. Since all of the jackets above are under $50, you need to run (not walk) and pick up a few of these beauties at your local Meijer. Not only are these styles going to help keep you warm, but keep you perfectly stylish while doing so.

3 Summer Jewelry Trends to Start Wearing Now

While the first day of spring was just a few short weeks ago, it’s already time to start thinking ahead to the beginning of summer. We’re welcoming warm days, sun-kissed skin and cloud-free skies with open arms – as well as all the amazing jewelry trends that come along with the warmer season. If you’re as anxious to update your summer-time accessories as we are, look no further than these bright necklace and earring styles you can start wearing right now.

Fringe Tassels

Fringe has been a hot trend this past year, and we’re just not ready to say goodbye this season! Tassels are flirty and playful (aka perfect for a sunny day), but still classy enough for date night or an afternoon in the office. Want to add another element to this detailed accessory? Mix metallics with neutrals or bright summer shades – like this yellow-gold and cream necklace we can’t get enough of.

If bold styles are more your thing, don’t fret – more vibrant accessory inspiration to come!

Chunky Pendants

As summer approaches, your clothing choices will no doubt become bolder in color, print and style – and your seasonal accessories should be updated to follow suit. Opt for statement necklaces with chunky pendants and large, dramatic medallions, or dangly earrings featuring a variety of stones, beads and tassels. As long as it stands out, anything goes!

Extra points if your accessories take command of your go-to summer outfit!

Vibrant Colors

Staying true to the eclectic theme that’s sure to dominate summer trends, we love mixing and matching vibrant beads, bows and tassels. We already know pink and yellow will be the “it” colors of the season, but don’t be afraid to feature your personal faves, too. Lime green, turquoise, indigo and orange all look great when thrown into the mix!

Hemlines and Heels: How to Style This Spring’s Spotlight on Ankles

As spring begins to peek around the corner, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for a new year of style.

This week, we’re welcoming Lauren from Lake Shore Lady to share how to wear a variety of hemlines and pairs of shoes as she showcases her five favorite looks for spring.

Though it might not quite feel like it yet, spring and summer are definitely on their way. As we ease into warmer temps, it’s so fun to play around with different denim hemlines… and maybe even expose our ankles again – gasp! But the absolute best part of spring denim trends is obviously pairing them with cute shoes. Right? Right.

Luckily, Meijer is always there to remind us that you don’t need to spend a crazy amount of money to be fabulously stylish. Yes, it IS possible to have fun with fashion on a budget, and these five looks are total proof. Let’s take a look:

Double Cuffed Jeans + Keds

Who doesn’t like a good pair of Keds?! There’s a reason they’ve been around for so long – they’re classics! Plus, they’re crazy comfortable and perfect for long walks, running errands all day, or even sightseeing. I don’t usually wear sneakers with anything but workout gear, but will always make an exception for these cuties. The key to styling? Go with a cuffed jean to show off the shoe. No boot cut jeans allowed!

Raw Hem Jeans + Mules

This look is so 90s and I love it! The light wash, the frayed hems and, of course, the mules. The only thing missing is a choker! I love that mules and a thicker, block heel are making a comeback. It’s such a sleek yet comfortable trend… and the best way to test it out is with a super affordable pair like these. I love to style them with a trendy raw hem in my jeans, as the messy fray is a perfect counterpoint to the structured mule.

Cropped Jeans + Ballet Flats

Ballet flats can sometimes seem a little blah – but add a crisscross design and I’m on board! Make sure you pair these with a cropped pair of jeans so you can show off that ankle strap. I wore a casual long sleeve tee for this look, but you could totally swap it out for a flirty blouse for a night on the town.

Gaucho Pants + Beachy Sandals

Culottes, palazzo pants, gauchos – whatever you want to call them, they’re back! The soft, flowy style is beach-inspired and has got me dreaming of more days in the sun. Find a pair to cinch at your waist, then tie your tee at the same spot (or wear a crop top!) and finish the look with a fun pair of sunnies and bright, beachy sandals.

Distressed Jeans + Block Heel Sandals

I firmly believe that every girl needs a pair of nude sandals – bonus points if they also have a low, walk-able heel! I’m so glad I found this new block heel pair at Meijer to replace my last go-to sandals (which had seen its fair share of miles). Seriously though, you’ll wear them all the time! They go with anything, especially these distressed jeans and pretty cold shoulder top. Just make sure to cuff your hem to show off that trendy, modern block heel!

What are your favorite pant + shoe combos?!

Trend Alert: Embroidered Tops

As spring begins to peek around the corner, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for a new year of style.

This week, we’re welcoming Tieka from Selective Potential to share her three favorite ways to style embroidered tops for spring.

When you picture a classic boho-inspired wardrobe, you immediately think of embroidered details, right? I’ve been working to nail down my personal aesthetic lately, and boho-inspired, folk styles are definitely what I love most (especially in a casual, girl-next-door kind of way). I was SO delighted to find items that fit this exact vibe at Meijer that I couldn’t wait to share my favorite ways to incorporate the embroidery trend this spring.

Collage 1

Look One

I’m obsessed with this darling black-and-white embroidered top, complete with loose sleeves and a peplum fit. This Massini top barely required any styling, because it’s a statement piece on its own! For this outfit, I paired the shirt with frayed denim jeans and some tawny, suede ankle boots. If you’re feeling a bit chilly, you could add an olive green cardigan, or if you’re in warmer temps, this top would be cute with a pair of denim shorts and cut-out sandals! As for your hair, loose waves go with any sort of boho-inspired look.

blush embroidered shirt

Look Two

For my second look, I chose this blush, John Paul Richard top from Meijer. This is honestly my favorite piece of clothing right now — no joke. It’s embroidered, lined and the quality is AMAZING. With this flowy, light-colored style, I chose darker denim with neutral flats, an olive-y brimmed hat and long, dainty jewelry. I could easily see this top being remixed several ways this spring — perhaps next time with a pleated chiffon olive green skirt?

pink shirt with embroidery and cardigan

Look Three

For look three, I found this spring-y, pink embroidered top. The Massini shirt is adorable on its own, but since it was a little bit colder (we’re so close to spring!), I paired it with a knit cardigan, dark denim, neutral ankle booties and a dusty blue crossbody bag. I’m excited to style the top several different ways this spring though… with a cute floral skirt, or some frayed white denim and casual tawny sandals.

I hope you enjoyed these different looks featuring tops from Meijer! Are you planning on incorporating embroidered items into your wardrobe this spring?
