How to Add Bold Color to Your Beauty Routine

As winter’s chill sets in, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From style tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for winter weather.

This week, we’re welcoming Andrea of blonde bedhead to help us beat winter’s drab palette with beauty routines in bold hues. Check out the three ways she uses trendy, mood shades to amp up her seasonal nail, lip and eye shadow styles.

Winter’s grey and gloom makes it such a drab time of the year, but our beauty choices don’t have to follow suit. I live in Michigan, where our winters rank as the second most miserable in the country because of the intense cold and endless stretch of sunless, gloomy days.

It’s easy to become awash in this grey misery, but with my 30 years of winter experience, I know you can snap yourself out of that funk with some color. Read on for three tips to inject color into your winter beauty routine!

Add a Moody Nail Color

I love a deep tone on my nails this time of the year. Instead of the usual black, I’ve found more interesting deep jewel tones like metallic blues, purple and even bright blue hues. I am obsessed with Revlon and essie nail polishes, both “drugstore” and luxury polishes available at Meijer. The color variety and application make it foolproof for someone like me who struggles to perfectly paint their nails. Or you can bring the color of your choice to your nail salon for a guaranteed perfect jewel-toned manicure.

Bright Pop of Lip Color

I can’t get enough of bright blue and purple lips right now. They pair so well with a barely-there makeup look, and let the lips shine on their own. I kept it simple with foundation to even out my skin tone, a bit of bronzer for contour and a swipe of mascara.

Because it’s winter and my lips are experiencing chronic dryness, I exfoliated first and added Aquaphor healing ointment to moisturize my intensely chapped lips. After a couple of minutes, I wiped off the excess.

Next, I lined my lips with a purple NYX lip liner and the NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Amethyst layered over top of it, although the application is easy enough that a lip liner isn’t absolutely necessary. I applied two coats to ensure an evenly distributed bold color across my lips and no need for any touch ups!

Shimmery, Bold Eyes

A vampy lip and a shimmery, bold eyelid are the perfect combination to break out of the winter blues. I love this look for a night out and the drama of the eyes and lips play perfectly for a drink at the bar or out on a dinner date. This makeup look made me instantly feel bright-eyed and sexy if I dare say.

color beauty routine bold eye shadow

I picked two L’Oreal shimmery eye shadows to achieve the smoky, dramatic eye, as well as NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Vintage because this formula is incredibly easy to apply, especially in rich tones that normally intimidate me. Why you ask? I don’t have a super steady hand and I need a formula that glides on, and the applicator lets me easily line my lips and fix any little mistakes I make.

Tip for making the color more intense and shimmery? Wet your brush first before applying.

Eyeshadows used:
L’Oreal Colour Riche Eyeshadow in Violet Beaute (violet colors work great for hazel/green eyes and loved the shimmery finish!)
L’Oreal Infallible 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Liquid Diamond. (The perfect loose eye shadow powder to add dimension to a dark, dramatic eye!)

Beat the Winter Skin and Hair Blues

As winter’s chill sets in, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From style tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for winter weather.

This week, we’re welcoming Natalie of Natalie in the City to share her cold-weather hair and skin care regimen to keep her locks luscious and her skin glowing all winter long.

woman-with-winter-coat

Winter takes its toll on everyone, but it may be affecting your skin and hair more than anything else. It doesn’t matter what skin type you were blessed with, freezing temps will dry out them all – and hair breakage is inevitable. So to prepare for the cold Chicago weather, I took a trip to Meijer to stock up on my beauty care must-haves.

collage-of-facial-products

I have combination/oily skin but, during winter, my skin is the furthest thing from oily, and blackheads become more evident on my entire face. To restore my natural oils and keep my pores clean, I add Garnier’s SkinActive Clean+ Blackhead Eliminating Scrub to my morning beauty routine two or three times a week. I massage it onto my face thoroughly then leave the invigorating scrub on for five minutes.

woman-using-face-wash

After rinsing the mask off, I apply Olay’s Complete All Day Moisturizer and SPF 15 for combination/oily skin. It’s critical that your winter beauty products contain SPF even if it’s gloomy outside. I also apply Olay’s Quench Ultra Moisture Body Lotion to my entire body twice a day to keep my skin moisturized and glowing.

When it comes to my hair, I have all the odds against me. My hair has made a transformation from dark brown to almost completely blonde in just one year; so keeping my hair moisturized during winter is a tough feat. I apply a Garnier Whole Blends avocado oil and shea butter mask to re-invigorate my strands three times a week in the evening. I get my hair wet before I shower and then I apply the mask generously, combing from root to tip until my hair is covered. Then I wrap my hair into a bun on top of my head and let the mask sit for 30 minutes.

After rinsing out the mask in the shower, I apply Whole Blends coconut oil and cocoa butter smoothing serum to fight frizz and nourish my hair.

The 3 Best Makeup Tutorials for All of Your Holiday Soirées

As winter’s chill sets in, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From style tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for winter weather.

This week, we’re welcoming Tawny of Glamorously Mommy to share three essential makeup looks to try this holiday season, no matter how casual or elegant the event!

holiday makeup products

During the holiday season there are so many things to get excited about, such as giving gifts and the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping. But nothing – I mean NOTHING – gets me more excited than a holiday party!  As a lady who loves a good glam makeup session, I understand not everyone is up for all the glitz and glitter like me, so I’m going to show you three holiday makeup looks you can take from a daytime office holiday party to a nighttime black tie event.

For these looks, I wanted to create a basic foundation for the face, and an eye look that I could build upon.  So good news!  All of these looks were created with ONE eye shadow palette. I know that not everyone has more than one eye shadow palette so it was important that I didn’t use too many products.  Of course, all of these amazing products can be found at your local Meijer.

Maybelline Master Prime Blur + Illuminate primer

In the first look, I kept it simple.  I started by prepping my skin with the Maybelline Master Prime Blur + Illuminate primer for hydrated, illuminated, healthy-looking skin.

Maybelline DreamLUMI Touch concealer in Honey

After applying foundation, color correct with Maybelline DreamLUMI Touch concealer in Honey.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cashmere

I started this simple eye look by applying the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cashmere all over the lid.

NYX Dream Catcher Palette

Next, I blend out the hard lines, using the light bronze eye shadow from the NYX Dream Catcher Palette for some dimension.  Then, I used my favorite mascara Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black.

NYX Butter Gloss in Tiramisu

To finish off the look I popped on a bright pink lip liner from NXY in the color pinky.  For a bit of shine, simply add NYX Butter Gloss in Tiramisu.

The next look is just a bit more elevated.  I already had the basic eye look down, so I really didn’t have to do a lot to bump up the drama just a bit.

NYX Dream Catcher Palette in Dusk til Dawn

Using the NYX Dream Catcher Palette in Dusk til Dawn, I placed shade #6 in the outer corner of the eye for more of a smoky look.

NYX Two Timer Kohl Pencil

Liner is the key to defining any eye look and adding lots of drama. I used the NYX Two Timer Kohl Pencil to line the top lash line.  This eyeliner is really cool because it has two sides: one with a kohl liner great for smoking out any eye look, and one felt tip liner for a more precise application. Next, I popped on a bit of blush and highlighter for color.

NYX Intense Butter Gloss

Adding a bold lip is the perfect way to turn a simple look into a head-turning one.  I used a berry lip liner and added this NYX Intense Butter Gloss in toasted marshmallow for a bold berry lip that’s sure to get you noticed at any holiday party.

finished look two bold lip and eye makeup

This next look is for your fancy parties… or if you’re just a “fancy pants” like me.  Hey, there is nothing wrong with having a little formal in your life, right?

smoky eye holiday makeup

For this look, I wanted it to be something that wasn’t too over-the-top glitzy. Start by creating a deeper crease using the black eye shadow in the palette (shown above), darkening the outer crease of the eye and the lower lash line.  This will give the effect of a more defined, smoky look.  Using a small definer brush, lightly apply a small amount of black to the outer corner, blending it very lightly.

NYX Two Timeron

Next, use the NYX Two Timeron felt tip side to create winged eyeliner on the outer corner of the eye.

KISS #11 makeup eyelashes

Ladies, lashes are where it’s at!  You can add a pair of eyelashes to elevate any eye look, but especially a smoky eye.  I used the KISS #11 lashes for this look.

Milani High Voltage red lipstick

After that, I used Milani High Voltage red lipstick to jazz up the look!

holiday makeup look three

Well… There you have it! Three simple holiday looks perfect for any occasion this season.  Which was your favorite?

5 Ways to Relax During the Holiday Season

products-to-relax-during-the-holidays

Between family get-togethers, shopping for gifts and maintaining your daily routine, we all know that the holiday season isn’t completely stress-free. While it’s always important to make time for yourself to relax and unwind, it’s especially crucial to do so during this busy time of year. So if you’re in need of a little TLC, here are a few easy (and affordable!) ways to de-stress this season.

natural-scented-body-wash-and-lotion

1. Swap your usual body wash + lotion combo for a nature-inspired scent, like Bodycology’s cherry blossom or Calgon’s Hawaiian ginger. The aromas are understated, yet crisp and fresh, so you’ll feel totally reinvigorated when you step out of the shower.

dr-teals-lavender-scented-products

2. Take a long, warm bath before you hit the hay, adding lavender-scented Epsom salt for an extra-soothing effect. Use a body scrub to exfoliate your skin while you soak, then apply Dr. Teal’s lavender body lotion after you towel off to keep your skin hydrated. If your skin is scorched from the brisk winter air, apply body oil instead of lotion – it’s a more concentrated form of hydration to soothe extra dry skin.

pure-clay-face-mask

3. Give yourself a DIY facial. Prep your skin with your usual cleanser before applying a brightening clay mask. Try the Pure-Clay Detox & Brighten Treatment Mask from L’Oréal to revive dull skin, or opt for an exfoliating charcoal mask to remove dead skin cells. Let the mask sit for 10-15 minutes, and then remove it with warm water using circular motions. Finish with a fragrance-free face moisturizer, and you’ll look like you have your holiday list handled.

hair-mask

4. If your hair appears dry and brittle from the cold, use a mask like Garnier Whole Blends to revitalize your strands. After washing your hair with your go-to shampoo, apply a generous amount of the treatment to your locks. Make sure you cover your hair from root to end, then let the mask work its magic by leaving it on for three minutes. The rich repairing treatment strengthens hair and helps prevent split ends and breakage, making it even easier to style for those upcoming holiday parties.

herbal-tea-and-dark-chocolate

5. Finally, light a few candles, get lost in your favorite book and treat yourself to some dark chocolate and a warm cup of herbal tea. The hot drink will be a welcome break from the brisk, chilly air, and the candle’s sounds and aromas will soothe your stress away.

With these simple tips, it’s never been easier to stay relaxed throughout the holiday season!

This Fall’s Top Beauty Trend to Try

Last month, we teamed up with CoverGirl to show you the must-have makeup trends that you need to try this fall. One of our personal favorites was a bold lip and eye duo, so we’re diving deeper with a full beauty tutorial on the trend. Modeled by Alexis of That Chic Lex, here’s exactly how to replicate the edgy mod-goth look.

fall-beauty-tutorial6

1. Begin by applying your foundation as usual.

fall-beauty-tutorial2

2. Spread shimmery neutral shadow onto both eyelids, using a slightly darker shade on the outer edges. Don’t forget to blend!

fall-beauty-tutorial4

3. With your favorite black or dark brown eyeliner, line the inner half of your upper eyelid using short, hair-like strokes. Then, create a small wing on the outer corner. Finally, connect the lines in the middle to form one long stroke.

4. Line underneath your eye as usual; then use a cotton swab to carefully smudge your liner (creating a soft, smoky appearance).

fall-beauty-tutorial5

5. Apply black, volumizing mascara like CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion, wiggling the brush back and forth to avoid creating clumps.

fall-beauty-tutorial-8

6. Next, line and fill in your lips using black or brown lip liner. Make sure it coordinates with your skin tone! Our go-to shade is 230 CoverGirl Lip Perfection “Radiant.”

7. Complete this modern look with a dark red lipstick that features hints of brown or black (we recommend CoverGirl 315 Euphoria). Rather than applying it directly from the tube, apply with a small makeup brush to avoid smearing the lipstick and liner together.

fall-beauty-tutorial-7

8. Dust a bit of powder across your face for long-lasting hold.

Perfection! Now it’s time to flaunt your new favorite fall makeup look everywhere this season, from apple orchards to Instagram-worthy picnics.

Fall Hair Trend to Try: The Introverted Fishtail Braid

As summer was coming to a close this year, we teamed up with Pantene to get all of the deets on this fall’s hottest hair trends. We saw beachy low buns, an upgraded ponytail and trendy new ways to wear traditional braids, but we just can’t get enough of this fresh take on introverted fishtail. Check out this in-depth tutorial (modeled by the lovely Nina from The HSS Feed) and we know you’ll love it as much as we do!

finished-hair

1. Begin by parting your hair to one side. Then, grab a 2” section of strands at your hairline and separate into two pieces.

hair-tutorial2

2. Take a small, half-inch piece from the right section of hair, pulling underneath and over the left section. Repeat on the opposite side.

hair-tutorial2

3. Continue twisting down toward the nape of your neck, keeping the braid close to your hairline.

hair-tutorial3

4. As the braid moves down past your ear, pull hair into it from the opposite side of your head to ensure that all of your strands are included in the style.

hair-tutorial4

5. Once your locks have all been pulled into the braid, continue your fishtail until you’re 3” away from the end of your strands.

hair-tutorial5

6. Secure with a clear plastic ponytail, then loosen the braid by tugging at the sides (starting from the bottom and working your way up).

7. Mist with hairspray to hold in place.

Now that you’re full of fall hair inspiration, check out these three essential fall makeup trends to try.

3 Essential Fall Makeup Trends to Try

Your wardrobe shouldn’t be the only thing changing with the seasons. Fall is the perfect time to transition your beauty routine with new products and even fresher looks. While the “no makeup” makeup trend never goes out of style, it’s time to experiment with looks that are a little bolder. If you’re as ready as we are to spice up your beauty regimen, here are three essential fall makeup trends we can’t wait to try.

Look One: The Blackout
A sultry evening look that pairs perfectly with neutral shadows. Modeled by Candace of Live, Love and Read.

sultry evening makeup

Great for a day with your girls or a night on the town, this smoldering look is both simple and stylish.

1. To begin creating this look, prep your face with your favorite liquid foundation and eye shadow.

2. Using short, hair-like strokes, line the inner half of your upper eyelid before creating a small wing on the outer corner. Then, connect the lines in the middle to form one long stroke.

3. Line underneath your eye as usual, and use a cotton swab to carefully smudge your liner (creating a soft, smoky appearance).

4. Apply black, volumizing mascara to your lashes (we recommend Covergirl LashBlast Fusion), wiggling the brush back and forth to avoid clumps.

5. Finish the look with a bold lip in your favorite shade.

Look Two: Mod-Goth
A bold look that pairs a dark lip with an edgy cat eye. Modeled by Alexis of That Chic Lex.

mod-goth makeup

Looking for a fresh spin on the traditional bold eye and lip? This dark duo is the edgy update you need.

1. Begin by applying your foundation as usual.

2. Spread shimmery neutral shadow onto both eyelids, using a slightly darker shade on the outer edges. Don’t forget to blend!

3. Complete your smoky eye using the blackout eyeliner tutorial above.

4. Next, line and fill in your lips using black or brown lip liner, depending on your skin tone. We recommend 230 Covergirl Lip Perfection “Radiant” for your go-to shade.

5. Complete the mod-goth look with a dark red-brown or red-black shade lipstick (we love Covergirl 315 Euphoria). Apply over the liner using a small makeup brush – instead of directly from the tube – to avoid smearing the liner and lipstick together.

Look Three: Glitter Bomb
For a fun daytime style, look no further than a sun-catching shimmery shadow. Modeled by Andrea of Blonde Bedhead.

glitter ombre eyeshadow

If sparkle is more your style, this playful eye with an ombre of color is the perfect look for you.

1. Prep your canvas with your usual foundation. Choose an eyeshadow kit with hints of glitter, like Covergirl’s Eye Enhancers in multiple shades.

2. As a base, brush the lightest, neutral shade across your lid, stopping just above the crease.

3. Select a slightly darker shadow to apply into your crease. Blend the colors well with the tip of your makeup brush.

4. Use the darkest shade on the palette as a soft liner for your upper lid – charcoal black is best if you have it!

5. Finish the look with a natural, rose lip to truly show off your sparkling eyes.

Now that your makeup is totally good to go, get fall beauty inspiration for your lovely locks!

6 Trendy Hairstyles to Try this Season

One of the best things about fall is changing up your wardrobe, so why not switch up your hairstyles as well? These six trendy ‘dos are perfect for any occasion – and you can create each of them in five simple steps. From beachy low buns to waterfall braids, here are our favorite hair looks we’ll be rocking this season:

fall-hairstyle-1

Knotty & Nice

1. To prep your locks for this romantic updo, mist your brush with a light layer of hairspray. Then, run it through your hair from mid-strand to end.

2. Mist a bit of hairspray into the air above your head, letting it fall onto your roots instead of applying it directly.

3. Braid the hair on one side of your head down to the nape of your neck, then tug on each side of the braid to loosen the strands.

4. Twist the braid up into a low bun and pin.

5. For long-lasting hold, finish this look with extra strength hairspray.

fall-hairstyle-3

Upgraded Ponytail

1. The base of this look is all-over texture, so begin by curling your hair with a 1” flat iron. Be sure to curl in all different directions in order to achieve a perfectly messy ‘do.

2. Grab a thick section of hair on the right side of your head, twisting and pulling it toward your scalp on the other side.

3. Use a bobby pin to hold the strand in place, then mist with texturing spray to secure.

4. Repeat steps two and three on the left, then again from either side, moving lower as you go. If you discover shorter strands won’t make a full loop, pin underneath near the nape of your neck.

5. Wrap the final twist under and back to where you started, forming a loop around your hair (just like a ponytail). Finally, curl a few pieces left out in front and hairspray.

fall-hairstyle-2

Waterfall Braids

1. Prep your strands for this style by straightening all but your top layer of hair.

2. Grab the bangs on one side of your head, separating the section into three equal parts.

3. Begin a normal French braid, gradually moving toward the back of your head.

4. When you’ve braided your hair just past your ear, begin using the “waterfall” technique. Instead of crossing the top strand over the middle, let it drop so that it falls straight. Pick up a section of hair directly behind the strand, using it in place of the original piece.

5. Repeat step four until you’ve reached the other side. Then, finish the look with a regular braid down the back.

fall-hairstyle-4

Braid-y Lady

1. On one side of your head, separate the front section of hair into two equal pieces.

2. Pull the right section of hair over the left. Then, add a few strands to the new section on the right. Pull this section over the left again and repeat – this will create a loose, beachy twist.

3. Repeat steps one and two on the other side of your head, twisting your hair in the opposite direction. Tie both braids with clear, elastic rubber bands.

4. Twist both braids together counter-clockwise, creating a crown-like half pony.

5. Secure the style with extra hold hairspray.

right-side

Swept Away

1. To achieve the beachy base of this look, use a 1” flat iron to create loose curls.

2. Add volume by misting texture spray onto your roots, then backcombing your strands from the bottom, up.

3. Pull your hair back into a loose ponytail, using a clear elastic to secure the style.

4. Tie your ponytail in a knot, then twist like a cinnamon roll.

5. Use bobby pins to hold the hair in place, creating a messy (but put-together) bun.

left-side

Introverted Fishtail

1. Begin by parting your hair to one side. Then, grab a 2” section of strands at your hairline and separate into two pieces.

2. Take a small, half inch piece from the right section of hair, pulling underneath and over the left section. Repeat on the left side.

3. Continue twisting down toward the nape of your neck, pulling hair into the braid from the opposite side of your head.

4. Stop braiding hair 3” from the end, securing with a clear elastic ponytail.

5. Loosen the braid by tugging at the sides, starting from the bottom of the style. Mist with hairspray to hold in place.

How to Start and Keep a Healthy Nightly Routine

As fall transitions us to cooler months, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From style tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for fall weather.

This week, we’re welcoming Tieka from Selective Potential to share her favorite products and style to keep your healthy, nightly routine on track throughout the fall season.

Lately I’ve been working on my nightly routine, so I can sleep better and wake up energized each morning. It’s so helpful to have a go-to process, and I always love reading about other people’s routines as well. I’m definitely a night owl, but I’ve been trying to become more of an early bird. I work full-time during the day, so I have to be up around 7:30 in the morning in order to get to work on time. Here’s what my nightly routine looks like lately:

coffee-photo

10:00 p.m. Nightly Routine Reminder

0019

I have a notification set at 10 p.m. to start my skincare routine. Sometimes I’m caught up in a TV show or browsing the web and don’t realize the time, so this has been a super helpful reminder to start getting ready for bed.

0006

0012

If I’m not already in pajamas (which I usually am as soon as I get home), I change into some. I love a comfy set of PJs! Especially as summer winds down, I love to sleep in layers. A pair of cozy pants, a long-sleeve top, a comfortable bralette and some warm fuzzy socks are my perfect sleep combination.

0018

10:15 p.m. Skincare Routine

0003

0044

I head into the bathroom to start my nightly skincare routine. I’m not always perfect, but I do make sure I always remove my makeup. I just recently picked up these Formula 10.0.6 Wipe Your Face Off cloth makeup removers from Meijer. They smell so good! The pink grapefruit and apple combination is a nice refreshing scent. I also love Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes, which are my usual go-to. But it was nice to switch it up!

0047

0050

After removing my makeup, I wash my face with a mild daily cleanser. I decided to try Formula 10.0.6’s Daily Foaming Cleanser from Meijer in Passionfruit & Green Tea, which also smelled amazing. In addition, I typically apply a light moisturizer and under-eye cream.

0052

On nights where I feel my skin needs an extra pick-me-up, I do a mask as well. This Formula 10.0.6 Mud Mask was so refreshing! It tingles for a little bit but goes away, and it wipes off very smooth. The orange and bergamot scents were also so uplifting.

0048

As soon as my skincare routine is done, I brush and floss my teeth, take out my contacts and put on my glasses for the evening. Toothpaste, floss and contact solution all come from Meijer, too. One-stop-shop, right?

0042

10:30 p.m. Head for Bed

0031

After my skincare routine, I always grab a water bottle to keep by my bedside. I let Winny outside to go potty, and grab her a Milkbone treat every night before bed (her favorite). I turn off all the apartment lights, turn on the porch light, switch on the A/C and cozy up into bed. I also love to light a candle before falling asleep.

0023

My goal is to fall asleep by 11:30 p.m., so I can get a full 7-8 hours of sleep each night. This means I have an hour in bed, which is ideal. Usually during this time, I love to scroll through my phone and catch up on Instagram and Snapchat.

0021

I also love to read before bed. I love picking up new magazines from Meijer as I’m in the checkout lane and browsing the book section, so I have new stuff to read all the time. Currently, I’m reading Emily Giffin’s “First Comes Love.”

0011

By 11:30 p.m., I usually turn the lights off, spray a little bit of lavender spray mist on our pillows, and try to sleep!

0035

7:30 a.m. Wake up

0032

0040

I try to wake up each morning around 7:30 a.m., but I’m definitely a snooze-button gal. Any tips for me there? Each morning I roll out of bed, let Winny outside and grab a cup of coffee which has been pre-brewed in my coffee maker. Best scent to wake up to, right? If I have a little time, I’ll relax, make my bed and sit down to enjoy my coffee. If not, I’ll quickly get dressed and do my makeup routine before heading out the door!

What’s your nightly routine like? Do you morning people have any secrets to share? What’s your favorite product?

Since my hair is still recovering from bleach damage and because it has a dry, curly texture, I’m thrilled Suave’s Coconut Oil Infusion Damage Repair Shampoo & Conditioner provides moisture without weighing my hair down. This is a newer product and I wanted to try another affordable line, since I go through so much shampoo and conditioner. I keep the conditioner in my hair for at least 5 minutes while I wash my face and shave my legs—the extra time pays off, leaving my hair feeling extra smooth.

Once I’m out of the shower, I dry off my hair by patting the towel on my hair, not rubbing. Rubbing it with the towel or putting your fingers in your hair too much creates more frizz, so I quickly pat the towel on my hair from root to tip.

Next, I immediately apply an oil or serum. I love any of the serums by Frizz Ease, but I recently tried OGX Renewing Argan Oil Of Morocco Penetrating Oil for dry or coarse hair. There honestly isn’t a better description for my hair: dry AND coarse. I love this line, but had not yet tried this oil until recently and it’s quickly become a new favorite. It adds some serious sheen and restores my dry ends. Be sure to use this product more towards the ends of your hair where it’s the driest (AKA the frizziest)!

The last step is gel! When I say gel, it might conjure up images of crunchy hair that looks stiff and lifeless. But, gel can be a curly hair girl’s best friend if you find the right product and use the right amount. I’ve tried different gels throughout the years, but my number one, tried-and-true product is Biolage Gelee All-Purpose Gel. It has a firm hold, but it doesn’t dry out the hair or leave it crunchy and stiff. It makes my curls soft and bouncy! The product really helps eliminate frizz and enhance the natural curl. I take penny sized amounts and apply to sections of my hair to ensure I’ve coated almost every strand, concentrating most of the product at the ends of the hair to make sure I don’t weigh down the top. I’ve been using this product for 15 years and once I realized it’s available at Meijer, it’s saved me a trip to the beauty store. So. Convenient.

And I always let my hair air dry to keep it healthy and allow the natural curl to shine!

The Best Three Fall Eye Makeup Trends to Try

As fall transitions us to cooler months, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From style tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for fall weather.

This week, we’re welcoming Jess from The Golden Girl to share the eye makeup trends she’s looking forward to most for fall, and what products you need to pull them off.

While I am never one to wish summer would come to an end, there are some pretty charming things about fall that I look forward to every year. #1–Football. (Okay, fine, I mean…snacks. Isn’t that why everyone likes football?) and #2–the chance to mix up your style! That doesn’t apply to just boots, jeans, and sweaters, but makeup too!

I’m so excited to show you three easily attainable beauty looks for fall. Yep–with just a few products you can buy from Meijer required for each look, and some no-fail techniques, you’ll be on your way out the door in no time.

Makeup Collage

Look #1: Subtle Shimmer

Metallic shimmer in hues of white and silver were spotted quite a few times on the fall runway this year! I was immediately drawn to this look because a touch of light sheen on the inner eyes tends to make them look bright and dewy. (Very necessary for busy girls who don’t get much sleep!) Often times, I don’t wear a ton of makeup–so this look is perfect for girls who tend to err on the more “au natural” side. I love how it’s fresh-faced, with a little bit of pizazz.

The best part about it? It only takes a couple of products to do, and it doesn’t take any precision. (No tricky eyeliner techniques required!)

First, I started by curling my lashes–something that is absolutely mandatory with this girl. (Stick-straight, stubby lashes over here!) I really like ELF’s eyelash curler–it does a great job, with no pinching!

Next, I applied mascara–I used L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara, which adds tons of volume to my sparse lashes!

For the finishing steps, I lined my eyes with NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in color #608. Swipe on a light gloss, like NYX Butter Gloss–and you’re out the door!

Lesson1-4

Easy, right? If you want a bit more “oomph,” move on to Look #2!

Look #2: Twiggy Lashes

I don’t know what it is, but I’m a total sucker for anything 60’s inspired–so I was very excited to see thick, Twiggy-inspired lashes all over the runway this year. To get this look, I used ELF “Natural Lashes” false eyelashes. I like this set because it comes with a mini tube of glue, so you don’t need to buy anything extra!

Misc Product Shots

You could easily add them onto look #1, or just add them to natural makeup for some extra pop. Tip: Measure the strips for length by placing them on your eye first. Trim them as necessary. Then, apply the glue, wait for 15-20 seconds for it to set, and apply to your lash-line. If you don’t get it right the first time, you can totally peel them off (gently) and try again.

Lesson2-4

When it comes to false lashes, practice makes perfect! After this, I then lined the inside of my upper eyelids with Maybelline’s Master Kajal eyeliner. This not only makes your eyes pop, but ensures there isn’t an obvious line between where the fake lashes begin and your natural lashes end.

Lesson2-6

To finish off this girly look, I just added more blush (the same as above) to the apples of my cheeks for a feminine, rosy glow. Finally, I lined my lips with NYX Lip Liner in “Nude Pink” which provides extra staying power–and finished with NYX Butter Gloss in “Creme Brulee” which is the perfect, soft pink for this subtle, yet glamorous look.

Look #3: Smoldering Liner

If you’re really looking to turn your look up a notch, you’ll love this sultry look perfect for a dolled up night on the town, a wedding, or other formal occasion. The smokey eye is certainly not a new trend, but thick, dark, charcoal liner? Spotted on nearly every runway this fall–and while many trends certainly aren’t for the faint of heart, this is one everyone can get behind!

Lesson3-1

I love that you can make this particular liner as heavy or light as you want. You can use it to line your inner rims and outer lash lines–plus, it goes on really easy, so it’s not too hard to apply.

Good news for ladies like me? This look is supposed to look a little messy. (As in a, “I totally meant to do that” way–not a “I tried 5 times this morning and this is as good as it’s going to get” type of way.) A sultry “perfectly undone” if you will.

You can totally build off the steps we went through in our previous looks, but you don’t have to. Here, I’m applying this on top of my fake eyelashes for a really dramatic look, but it will look just as great with your natural lashes as well.

All I did was line the rims of my eyes with the same liner, Maybelline’s Master Kajal in “Onyx Rush.” Then, I dabbed on a bit of Maybelline’s 24 Hour Tattoo Cream Eyeshadow in “Deep Forest” which is a gorgeous, smokey green hue–a great alternative if you aren’t looking to go super-smokey black.

Lesson3-Products

To finish off the look, I added a swipe of dramatic red lipstick–NYC lipstick in color #511.

Lesson3-6

There you have it! Three totally achievable and attainable looks for fall! Which one is your favorite?

Summer Vacation Essentials: The Best Camping Hairstyle & Skincare Tips

This summer, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to showcase the season’s hottest trends. From style trends to home décor tips, we love seeing how these fashionistas celebrate the warm weather.

This week, we’re welcoming Melissa from The Bee’s Knees to share her best tips and must have products for an uncomplicated beauty routine while camping (or glamping!) one last time this summer.

Glamping 4

Camping is one of my all time favorite summer activities! I feel like I get to see more unique places and things and also connect more with nature when I’m out in the woods with my tent. Here’s what I don’t like: bathroom runs in the middle of the night (ha) and keeping up with my normal beauty routine. Everything can seem a bit more complicated without the amenities of home. That’s why I’m here to share some of my favorite beauty products and tips with you for camping, or ‘glamping.’ Wink.

First things first, it’s time to simplify. And as with any good trip, this will take a little planning, but it’s so worth it. Create a checklist of all the things you’d normally take on a trip and trim it down. Way down. What do you ‘really’ need? Narrow down your list and go from there.

Here are a few items that made the cut on my ‘must have’ camping checklist (and bonus, they’re all from Meijer. No extra shopping stops needed!):

1. Skincare Products: Garnier Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water & Aveeno Absolutely Ageless Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30

Glamping 9

Both of these products are amazing for camping. The Micellar cleansing water is ideal if you don’t have access to a bathroom with running water. It removes makeup, cleanses and refreshes all in one! Perfect. This Aveeno daily moisturizer has also become a favorite of mine. It packs a serious SPF punch (30) and doesn’t even feel like you’re wearing sunscreen!

2. Sunscreen: Sun Bum SPF 50

Glamping 5

Listen, we’re adults. We all know the dangers of prolonged sun exposure and looming threat of skin cancer. Just be safe and use sunscreen! I love this one by Sun Bum. It has no parabens or oils and won’t block your pores. It also claims to be anti-aging and hypoallergenic. I wore this in 95-degree weather at the water park and didn’t burn at ‘all.’ I call that a win!

3. Makeup: Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer, Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Niagara Overlook, Maybelline Brow Drama in Deep Brown and Rimmel London Scandal Eyes in Extreme Black

Glamping 7

Glamping 6

This may seem like quite the lineup of beauty items but let me assure you I can apply all of these products in less than 15 minutes. Not bad! I don’t like to spend a lot of time on makeup when I’m camping. I prefer a more natural look. These products are perfect for looking a bit undone but still put together. The butter bronzer can be applied all over the face using the sponge applicator that comes in the compact (one of the few I actually like). Just don’t go too heavy. The Maybelline brow drama really helps add definition and color to the brows! Finish up with two coats of mascara and the lip crayon—this is my favorite Burt’s Bees color.

Glamping 3

4. Hair Products: Batiste Dry Shampoo, Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Spray and Goody Ouchless hair ties

Glamping 8

This is all I need for my hair when camping! Beach spray, dry shampoo, hair ties, done. The beach spray is the perfect product for air-drying your hair and the dry shampoo helps stretch your style so you’re not washing it every day (how annoying, right?). And the Goody hair ties are perfect for upgrading your traditional ponytail or bun. I love the patterns on them!

This is my go-to camping hairstyle, and most definitely how you’d find me if you ran into me at a state park:

Glamping 2

To get this look just apply the beach spray to damp hair and let it dry. Then section off the top part of the hair and pull it through a half pony loop, to be secured with a cute Goody hair tie. That’s it! Easy peasy.

Happy Glamping!

Back-to-College 101: 8 Shower Caddy Essentials

The first day of the semester is just around the corner, which means the return of homework, all-nighters and residence halls. While you’re probably prepared with your school supplies and dorm décor, it can be easy to forget about shower necessities. Whether you’re sharing a bathroom with your roommate or your entire floor this year, here are eight shower caddy essentials to always have on hand:

Shower Caddy

1. After a long day filled with classes and homework, give your face some much needed TLC with Clean & Clear Deep Action Exfoliating Scrub. Its oil-free formula reaches deep to the pores to dissolve dirt, oil and even makeup, leaving your face feeling clean and refreshed.

2. Between school, sleep and your social life, a few minutes to spare are far and few between. Save time in the shower with Dove Purely Pampering Nourishing Body Wash – it cleanses AND moisturizes, so you don’t have to worry about lotion post-rinse.

3. Gently exfoliate while you shower with a colorful Net Sponge. It’s a simple step and your skin will thank you!

4. Early first semester, the weather is still warm and shorts are still an option. Invest in a Gillette Venus & Olay Disposable Razor to keep your legs looking smooth in class and after hours.

5. To achieve legs that are both soft and smooth, incorporate Gillette Venus Shave Gel with Olay into your shaving routine. It has 5 times the moisture of a regular bar of soap!

6. For those mornings you oversleep before your 8 a.m. class, have a Bath Collection Animal Print Shower Cap on hand. By keeping your hair dry during a quick in-and-out rinse, you’ll be ready to go and on your way in no time! (Check out these easy ideas for second-day hair – you can thank us later).

7. On mornings you do have time for shampoo and conditioner, use OGX Rejuvenating Cherry Blossom Ginseng. Its soothing blend of extracts will hydrate your hair, giving it the ultimate shine – not to mention a delicious scent.

8. If you’re on a time crunch and need dry hair stat, use a Goody QuikStyle Water Wicking Shower Comb. It reduces water by 20 percent and removes moisture with every stroke.

With these eight essentials, you’ll have everything you need in your college shower caddy – just don’t forget the towel!
