The 4 Best Ways to Style Sneakers for Fall

As fall transitions us to cooler months, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips and makeup trends to hairstyles and home décor, we’re excited to see how these stylistas gear up for fall weather. This week, we’re welcoming Nina of The HSS Feed to share how she’s incorporating comfortable New Balance sneakers into four different street style-ready outfits.

If I could spend every single day in my sneakers, there’s a pretty solid chance that I would. Combine that comfort with fall style, and that’s a trend I can absolutely get on board with.

When you look around at street style on Pinterest and Instagram lately, you’ll see lots of outfits pairing sneakers with everyday ensembles. Today, I’m excited to share four ways to wear my New Balance shoes (all now available at Meijer!) with outfits outside of the gym this season.

Can athleisure please be a trend every season? Although gym attire pairs best with sneakers most of the time anyway, you can certainly create a more polished look for running errands, heading to brunch or, if you’re like me some days, just to spend the day in! Your favorite pair of leggings and a cool crew neck sweatshirt are the perfect match for these gray New Balance shoes with a pop of pink.

I always love seeing the dress/sneaker combo on Pinterest, but I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off as well as the ladies sporting the look. An easy way to approach this outfit is to start with a neutral shoe, like these silver New Balance sneakers, then opt for a solid dress in a color you love. I tend to stick with black because it’s versatile, but the cardigan adds texture and a light layer that’s perfect for transitioning into fall.

Denim Dos

This look is subtly sporty with the striped band on the lace sweatshirt, making it work even better with a pair of New Balance shoes. These cropped jeans with a frayed hem are not only perfectly on trend, but also help show off your adorable, everyday sneakers! I love this outfit for weekends when I’m out and about with friends, but it also helps me feel put-together for casual days at home.

Floral Jacket

I love all of the details in this outfit! The silky jacket, lace hem of the tank and dark denim make it feel more dressed up, but the sneakers add a level of comfort that really completes the look. All of the pieces in this ensemble are versatile, so you can mix and match with items you already own to create a look that’s perfect for the office on Casual Friday (or even date night!).

How are you sporting sneakers in your everyday style? What’s your favorite way to wear them outside of the gym?

Top ‘90s Trends to Try (Again!)

It’s no secret that ‘90s trends are back for spring and summer, and it’s taking us on a trip down a stylish memory lane. From chokers and velvet to old school blouses and jeans, we’re wishing we’d never cleaned out our closets from back then! However, the best part about these trends coming back is we can marry them with our favorite looks of 2017. If you’re ready to put a modern twist on your favorite ‘90s comebacks, check out our top five trends from the decade to try again.

1. Shoulder details

There’s no doubt shoulder details are having a moment in 2017, but they were also an iconic trend back in the ‘90s. While ‘90s fashion had us pulling one shoulder out of an oversized tee, today’s version is a little more intentional. From cold shoulder, to off-the-shoulder, to shirts with shoulder cutouts, this look is – and always has been – one of our summer faves. Channel your inner ‘90s gal and pair this trend with high-waisted denim, or opt for breezy soft shorts in hammered satin to put a modern spin on the outfit. And by the way, don’t be afraid to throw prints into the mix, too. Timeless patterns like floral will never go out of style!

2. Ruffled blouses

Vintage-inspired ruffles were a staple of ‘90s dress wear, but in this decade, we’re welcoming a more casual take on the look. We love this trend paired with light wash denim and sneakers (especially when the upper and shoelaces are made of velvet!). You can also transform this trend for work, so never fear – just tuck the top into dress pants or a high-waisted pencil skirt, then finish off the look with a pair of block heel sandals. Extra style points if you incorporate a choker + pendant necklace combo.

3. Menswear-inspired blazers

Oversized blazers aren’t just cozy, they’re also on trend right now. While this look featured pinstripes and wool fabric in the ‘90s, we put a feminine twist on our modern version of the suit. We can’t get enough of this silky, floral print material – and love how it looks when paired with an otherwise casual outfit, like this lingerie-inspired, lace tank. If you’re not into the juxtaposition of dressy and laidback styles, throw the blazer over top of a solid fitted sundress. The options are endless when it comes to this outerwear!

4. Statement jewelry

While your accessories no longer feature peace signs or yin and yang, the bold nature of ‘90s jewelry easily translates to modern trends. Statement necklaces and earrings add the perfect touch to present-day outfits, whether they highlight large pendants, beaded fringe or classic dangly hoops. Our favorite looks include all of the above, as there’s no better ode to ‘90s fashion than to stand out from the crowd. Pair your favorite pieces with a faux jumpsuit look created with closet staples of solid, fitted tanks and soft culotte bottoms in hammered satin.

5. Velvet shoes

We all remember having velvet in our closets as kiddos, and now this material is back in style in ways no one ever expected. From tennis shoes to “flatforms,” our favorite modern way to rock this fabric is on our feet! Go the simple route with slip on sandals or neutral, velvet sneakers – or make a statement with details like roses and pompoms. No matter your personal style, this is a ‘90s trend that everyone can pull off.

The Best Sandals for Every Summer Occasion

It’s a tale as old as time – you’re about to walk out the door to attend one of many summer events, and all you want in the world are shoes that are cute AND comfy. You’ll be dancing the evening away at a wedding or spending date night walking on the beach (hey, a girl can dream!), and now, all you need is the perfect sandal.

Cork slip-ons are as sensible as they are trendy, so we’re sharing four ways to style them – no matter where your summer takes you!

Date Night

Since summer date night is the perfect excuse to rock flirty prints and florals, complete your look with simple sandals in a crisp, solid color. This way, your shoes will complement your outfit, rather than taking command of it! For example, our favorite part of this ensemble is how the footwear accents the romper’s pattern – the white totally brightens up the outfit as a whole. P.S. If you’re not a romper kind of gal, these slip-ons also look adorable with a trendy, printed mini dress.

Casual Wedding

If you’ve been invited to a summer wedding with a casual dress code, it’s the perfect opportunity to wear comfy shoes (and dance in them all night long!). We love this sleeveless, chambray dress paired with strappy floral sandals – the simplicity of the outfit really lets the shoes shine! To draw more attention to your dainty, colorful footwear, choose accessories that match a hue featured in the summery print. A burgundy statement necklace or earrings would complete this look in the best way (tips for styling statement jewelry are on here!).

Baby Shower

For days spent showering moms-to-be and playing games like “pink or blue,” choose a dressier pair of slip-ons like this rose gold style. Metallic shoes in any shade look great with dainty, pastel hues (I mean, we seriously can’t get enough of this chiffon kimono + sandal ensemble). This look is also a must-try for summer bridal showers, but take care to stay away from white – you don’t want to overshadow the guest of honor!

Weekend Brunch

For casual mornings with your girls when all you need is bacon and eggs, pair tan cork sandals with denim capris and an embroidered tank. An earthy tone like tan perfectly complements this olive top, and embroidered details bring a laidback, bohemian vibe to your look. Casual (and sensible) slip-ons are a perfect match for this outfit! If the day is extra sunny and you’ll be brunching on a patio, these shoes also look amazing with a flowy, neutral sundress.

If you don’t have a pair of cork sandals (or four) at home, get over to your local Meijer A-S-A-P! There’s nothing better than a versatile, cute and comfy shoe.

Hemlines and Heels: How to Style This Spring’s Spotlight on Ankles

As spring begins to peek around the corner, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear the season’s hottest trends. From fashion tips to makeup trends to home décor, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas gear up for a new year of style.

This week, we’re welcoming Lauren from Lake Shore Lady to share how to wear a variety of hemlines and pairs of shoes as she showcases her five favorite looks for spring.

Though it might not quite feel like it yet, spring and summer are definitely on their way. As we ease into warmer temps, it’s so fun to play around with different denim hemlines… and maybe even expose our ankles again – gasp! But the absolute best part of spring denim trends is obviously pairing them with cute shoes. Right? Right.

Luckily, Meijer is always there to remind us that you don’t need to spend a crazy amount of money to be fabulously stylish. Yes, it IS possible to have fun with fashion on a budget, and these five looks are total proof. Let’s take a look:

Double Cuffed Jeans + Keds

Who doesn’t like a good pair of Keds?! There’s a reason they’ve been around for so long – they’re classics! Plus, they’re crazy comfortable and perfect for long walks, running errands all day, or even sightseeing. I don’t usually wear sneakers with anything but workout gear, but will always make an exception for these cuties. The key to styling? Go with a cuffed jean to show off the shoe. No boot cut jeans allowed!

Raw Hem Jeans + Mules

This look is so 90s and I love it! The light wash, the frayed hems and, of course, the mules. The only thing missing is a choker! I love that mules and a thicker, block heel are making a comeback. It’s such a sleek yet comfortable trend… and the best way to test it out is with a super affordable pair like these. I love to style them with a trendy raw hem in my jeans, as the messy fray is a perfect counterpoint to the structured mule.

Cropped Jeans + Ballet Flats

Ballet flats can sometimes seem a little blah – but add a crisscross design and I’m on board! Make sure you pair these with a cropped pair of jeans so you can show off that ankle strap. I wore a casual long sleeve tee for this look, but you could totally swap it out for a flirty blouse for a night on the town.

Gaucho Pants + Beachy Sandals

Culottes, palazzo pants, gauchos – whatever you want to call them, they’re back! The soft, flowy style is beach-inspired and has got me dreaming of more days in the sun. Find a pair to cinch at your waist, then tie your tee at the same spot (or wear a crop top!) and finish the look with a fun pair of sunnies and bright, beachy sandals.

Distressed Jeans + Block Heel Sandals

I firmly believe that every girl needs a pair of nude sandals – bonus points if they also have a low, walk-able heel! I’m so glad I found this new block heel pair at Meijer to replace my last go-to sandals (which had seen its fair share of miles). Seriously though, you’ll wear them all the time! They go with anything, especially these distressed jeans and pretty cold shoulder top. Just make sure to cuff your hem to show off that trendy, modern block heel!

What are your favorite pant + shoe combos?!

3 Ways to Style a Block Heel Sandal

spring block heel sandals

We’ve all been there – you’re ready to head out the door and your OOTD would look perfect with a pair of heels, but you’ll be on your feet all day and want to spare yourself the pain. So you opt for flip flops or flats instead and go about your busy day.

Well guess what? This spring’s hottest shoe trend is the block heel sandal (a more comfortable, sensible take on those tall, harsh stilettos). If you’re ready to give your spring footwear a small, yet fashionable lift, here are three adorable ways to style block heel shoes this season.

black block heel sandals

Simple chic

For a chic, minimalistic take on this hot sandal trend, opt for a classic black style with toe and ankle straps. These heels are the perfect match for a solid top and your favorite skinnies, and will (literally!) elevate your simple, laidback look. Just make sure to stick to a narrow pair of denim, since jeans with a long, wide hem will hide shoes with short heels – and this is footwear you definitely want to flaunt! You could also rock these pumps with dress pants for work (more to come on that later).

dark beige block heel sandals

Trendy casual

You can’t go wrong when you pair two shoe trends together, which is why a block heel + cutouts = total perfection. These dark beige sandals look great with a white-on-white ensemble, but don’t be afraid to add a jean jacket if you want another pop of color! If an all-neutral outfit totally isn’t your thing, pair the heels with dark denim and a springy floral top.

Business professional

You already know this sandal looks on point with jeans, but this versatile block heel is also a great choice for work. Pair the style with cropped dress pants or a classy pair of joggers, and you’ll look totally put together (without killing your feet!). These shoes are also a perfect match for knee-length or midi dresses, whether you’re spending the day in the office or out for a night on the town.

The Best Athletic Shoes for Every Type of Workout

2017 is finally in full swing, which means your brand new resolutions probably are too. If you decided to focus on fitness this year, it’s important to ensure you’ve got the right shoes to succeed. Whether they’ll inspire you to meet your goals or you’re just in desperate need of an upgrade, here are the best athletic shoes to invest in (based on your favorite workouts).

1. Running

If your main form of exercise is running or jogging, opt for a lightweight shoe with a cushioned sole. To ensure the sneaker will be flexible enough during your workout, the pattern on the bottom should resemble a waffle iron. This design allows your foot to bend from toe to heel, but prevents it from twisting to either side (which could cause an injury).

Style Tip: If you’re running outside, don’t forget to bundle up! Keep your ears toasty with a headband or knit hat; then protect your hands with your go-to gloves or mittens. Be careful not to dress too warm, though – the temp will feel about 20 degrees higher when you start to sweat, and you don’t want to worry about shedding layers mid-run!

2. Strength training

If lifting weights is more your jam, choose shoes with a hard, dense sole – the thinner, the better. This will allow you to feel the floor, giving you the traction you need to create a strong, stable base. Avoid using your running shoes for this type of exercise. While their soft, cushiony soles are great for absorbing impact, they can cause instability when squatting or swinging your kettle bell.

Style Tip: Brightly colored gym attire is always an energy booster, so don’t be afraid go bold this season! If an understated look is more your style, pair a vibrant sports bra and socks with a neutral tank and leggings.

3. Cross training

If you love changing up your workout on the daily, shoes built for cross training are the best choice for you. Their X-patterned bottoms are built for changing direction, while their strong mesh sides protect your ankles from injury. Kick boxing, aerobics, Zumba and more? Bring it on!

Style Tip: Cowl neck sweatshirts are great for staying warm outside – but they’re also great for warming up in the gym! Start your routine wearing the cozy top, then take it off when you start to sweat. You’ll be ready to kick up your workout in no time!

4. Walking

Finally, if you prefer a brisk stroll over other forms of exercise, opt for shoes made specifically for walking. The kicks’ characteristics will closely resemble running shoes – the only difference is the soles are a little less flexible.

Style Tip: Another trend that’s not going away in 2017? Patterned leggings! Have fun with all sorts of prints and colors when choosing your bottoms. To ensure your athletic look doesn’t become too busy, pair them with a solid top in a neutral or matching tone.

Which workout has been your go-to so far this year?

How to Wear 1 Boot 3 Ways

When it comes to autumn footwear, boots are truly all you need. With endless styles and ways to wear them, what more could a fall fashionista ask for? The best part about this season’s boots is you don’t need to change your pair to change your look. Whether you’re going for a classic cowgirl vibe or pairing them with your go-to skinnies, here are three trendy ways to style your favorite boots this season.

1. Tucked in

Show off any fringe, studs and embroidered details by tucking your pants down into your boots. Complete the ensemble with a solid-colored top to ensure your shoes are the star of the show – patterns or graphics can make your outfit distracting.

Style tip: This look works best when paired with skinny jeans or leggings, since there’s no extra fabric creating bulk around your ankles.

2. Over-the-top

Flare jeans are back and better than ever – and they’re a perfect match for your booties this fall. Pair this combo with a boho-inspired top for a 70’s-esque look that’s sure to turn heads. We can’t get enough of this throwback silhouette!

Style tip: Make sure your jeans are just the right length: brushing the top of your foot. Pants that are too long will hide the boot completely.

3. Rolled up

If you want a laidback look fit for a day at the pumpkin patch, roll up your skinnies just above your boots. Don’t worry if the cuffs don’t match perfectly! This style is meant to appear casual and carefree.

Style tip: Take care not to roll up your denim too high. A cuff that’s too large can make your legs look short! A good rule of thumb is to show about an inch of ankle.

Sneaker Street Style: 3 Ways to Wear Tennis Shoes

This summer, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to showcase the season’s hottest trends. From style trends to home décor tips, we love seeing how these fashionistas celebrate the warm weather.

We believe a chic pair of comfortable tennis shoes should be a summer staple, so this week we’re welcoming Lilly from Lilly Style to share her favorite outfits to wear with sneakers this summer.

I’m a huge fan of sneakers. Sneakers are no longer just gym shoes—the right pair goes with just about anything. It is possible to look chic and put together in a pair of tennis shoes. My go-to footwear style is classic minimalist with a mix of contemporary, but my sneakers collection includes many different styles.

I picked up this pair of Adidas at Meijer recently—they’re ultra light and comfortable, and perfect for a day of walking. Below are some tips for my favorite ways to style sneakers.

Keep it Simple and Fun

Shorts and tees or tanks are THE summer staple outfit. They’re an easy go-to and the perfect outfit if you’re having a laidback weekend or if you’re on the move. Since these sneakers are already colorful, I kept the rest of the outfit simple and within a similar color palette to complement the sneakers. And I definitely added some fun jewelry to complete the look.

Keep it Casual and Chic

White jeans and a chambray shirt is one of my favorite combinations to wear. I call this my “fool proof outfit” because you can’t go really wrong with this combination—you can wear nearly any pair of sneakers with it! And the best part is that it is not restricted to a certain age, it looks great on everyone.

And the truth is, nothing is as comfortable for an all day of exploring a new city than a chic pair of shoes like these. My recent trip to Croatia and Italy just confirmed this—since we explored and walked a lot, I ended up purchasing a pair of Adidas sneakers a few days into my trip to replace my flats that were no longer keeping my feet happy.

Keep it Cute and Comfortable

Lastly, a cute pair of sneakers really pulls together an athleisure outfit. I love cool summer evenings and when the weather is cooler in the late evening, walks outside become more frequent (and my dog is happy about it, too!)  This top and bottom combo from Meijer brings out the color in these sneakers. Plus not only are they extremely comfortable, but I feel more motivated to workout or extend my walk when a cute workout outfit is involved.

The Only Two Pairs of Shoes You Need This Summer

This spring, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From makeup tutorials to style tips, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas take runway trends and make them all their own.

This week, we’re welcoming Kristin from Everything’s Always Sunny to show us what she’s wearing with spring’s cutest footwear. With just two pairs of sandals, she shows us how strappy sandals are the ultimate summer accessory.

Even though it’s still a bit chilly in Michigan, nothing gets me more excited for summer like a fresh pair of shoes. There’s something about finally packing my snow boots in the back corners of my closet to make room for flip flops and mules that means warmer weather is on its way. Finally.

When it comes to picking out new shoes, I always try to find trendy sandals that are versatile enough to go with everything.  My style is pretty laid back, chill and simple, so boho styles usually fit my wardrobe pretty well.

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

This season, it’s all about strappy lace ups, which is why this Falls Creek nude flat sandal is one of my new favorites. Since they’re neutral I can pair them with everything from floral prints to classic chambray denim dresses.

One of my favorite go-to summer looks is a sleeveless denim dress with a classic black bag, dressed up with some cute statement jewelry. I love this dress from Meijer since it’s so effortless – the tie belt gives it just enough shape. Tassels and marble are going to be everywhere this summer, making this necklace the perfect accessory.

Just add a chain-strap crossbody bag (another Meijer find!), and this look is everything summer style should be.

While strappy neutral flats are perfect for weekends, every girl needs a bit of a heel once in a while, and nothing is more timeless than black.

Since I wear dresses all the time, these Massini sandals are exactly what I need when I want to look a little dressier. This strappy number has a classic, sophisticated look but with a kitten heel they’re so comfortable! I can’t believe my go-to sandals were so affordable – definitely a shopping win.

With these two pairs of shoes, I can almost feel it getting warmer so I can start wearing them more often. Between tie-up flats and strappy sandals, which spring trend are you most excited to wear?

Lilly Style’s Spring Color Crush

This spring, we’re partnering with our favorite style bloggers to show us how they wear this season’s hottest trends. From makeup tutorials to style tips, we’re excited to see how these fashionistas take runway trends and make them all their own.

This week, we’re welcoming Lilly from Lilly Style to share her favorite color for spring—pink! As she showcases below, pink is the perfect color to welcome warmer weather and there’s a variety of ways you can incorporate it into your style this season.

Rose Quartz collage photo

It comes as no surprise that the Pantone color of 2016 is Rose Quartz.

For me personally, pastel colors equal spring. Since my #1 favorite color, gray, is not overly spring-like, I’ll share my second favorite color—pink. I haven’t met a shade of pink I didn’t like. I think I have managed to acquire every nail polish in all shades of pink. I find pink to be such a happy color and pale pinks to be very soothing.

Now, not everyone is a fan of pink and some shades are prettier than others. Even those who are not big fans of brighter pink colors might agree that blush/pale/rose pink are beautiful and a lot easier to work with.

Pink complements an array of colors. It’s so easy to incorporate not only into your wardrobe but also to your interior décor.  It looks great with white or heather gray. For a bigger contrast, pair it with charcoal gray or navy. Even black!

If you like pink but are not quite ready to incorporate into your wardrobe just yet, start small…like a soft pink scarf, nail polish or pink lipstick. You can’t really go wrong there.

During almost every trip to Meijer for groceries, I end up in the beauty section looking at nail polishes or lipsticks. In one of my recent trips to Meijer, I picked up this pretty soft pink nail polish by Essie in Muchi, Muchi (the navy color is in Midnight Cami).

Here are all the other ways I’m celebrating pink this season:

Fresh flowers are one of those things I have a hard time passing up while grocery shopping.  I love having fresh flowers in my home…they’re so cheerful and brighten everything up.

3 Spring Shoes You Can’t Live Without

Just like we need our snow-shoveling boots, our knee-high rider boots and our favorite ankle booties every winter, spring has its own set of can’t-live-without footwear. And while we’d like to live in a world where it’s all about dashing around town in flip flops, we know there are much more stylish (not to mention comfortable) options than our standby plastic thongs.

This season, we’re rounding up our three spring shoe styles that we can’t live without. Once you see our lineup, it’s easy to see why these are on our can’t-miss list this year.

women's floral, metallic and patterned canvas boat shoes

1. The Canvas Boat Shoe

You don’t have to be on a boat to appreciate the nautical inspiration in this season’s go-to flat. Find a bright color, peppy print or cord detail for an on-trend style that’s all your own.

  • Floral: Floral is the absolute must-have print this season. Whether it’s a large petal shape or an assortment of bright colors, we love anything that mimics our favorite arboretum.
  • Metallic: Though black, brown and cream will forever be in our hearts, we love how metallic is taking over as the go-to neutral for any outfit. Slip on a pair of silver or gold kicks for an extra touch of fancy, elevating your casual tees and boyfriend jeans to trendsetter status.
  • Patterned: Patterns are an easy way to add a little zest to an otherwise plain outfit. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns! Stripes and hearts are a surprising duo that’s sure to add an extra dose of fun to your day.
  • Statement: With a diverse pastel spring palette, we can’t help but add them to all our beloved accessories. Pick your favorite hue – like a bright robin egg blue – to add a pop of color your spring ensemble.

women's shoes for spring chunky low heels

2. The Wear-Every-Day Neutral Heel

Make sure you find one with a chunky low heel for a shoe you actually can (and will, trust us) wear every day.

  • Woven Wedge: Looking for the perfect wedge to get a start on beach season? This woven straw beauty is accented with a gold band and leather slingback strap, giving it a modern, seaside vibe.
  • Faux Leather Sandal: There are few materials more timeless than leather. A pair of faux leather wedges studded at the base looks as good with a sundress as it does with rolled ankle jeans.
  • Laser Cutout Slingback: When it comes to textured patterns, we can’t get enough of cutout details in our spring closet. This peep-toe style lets you show off your pedi, while the slingback ankle is perfect for slipping on and off.
  • Chop Out Booties: This trendy update to your go-to ankle bootie is anything but basic. Tie details mimic last season’s crave-worthy fringe while the open toe means this is chunky heel is definitely ready for sunshine.

women's gladiator sandals for spring

3. The Go-To Gladiator

Beaded or metallic, bright or subtle, these barely-there sandals are the easiest way to get in the mood for sunshine.

  • Statement Shiny: Gladiator sandals with their signature structure are more fun in a shiny metallic shade. We love floral patterns in girly shades that make these sandals fierce and feminine.
  • Multicolor Beads: Elevate your style without heels by donning a pair of multicolored beaded sandals. By finding a pair in blue and pink or orange and purple, your look gets an instant one-two punch of color.

With a pair of boat shoes, neutral heels and flashy sandals, your closet will be as ready for warm weather as you are. Now, the only hard part left is picking out which style you want to wear first…
